George Davis, Sr

George Davis, Sr., son of the late James and Evelina Davis, was born in Charleston South Carolina on March 31, 1934. He departed this life quietly on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 6:20 a.m., surrounded by his family at home. George attended Jamestown High School in Jamestown South Carolina. George and his siblings were raised in a Christian home and fellowshipped with Charity Baptist Church in Charleston. When his father moved the family to Honey Hill, they joined Wesley AME Church, where he was an avid Sunday school student under his Class Leader, Deacon Harold Padgett and pastoral leadership of Reverend Butler. At the age of thirteen, during a revival at the Jehovah Holiness Church, that night, George accepted the call of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, was baptized and received the Gift of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in other tongue. He and his siblings would often tell the stories of how they would experience the move of God by dancing and worshiping God in the Spirit. George migrated his family to Baltimore in the early 60’s after working for his cousin William Davis and Aussie McConnell Logging Company in Shulerville. Here he worked for various companies including Consolidated Engineering, JohnMcShane, Poole & Kent, Fishbach & Newburg Construction Companies, and Flanigan & Son Asphalt Company before retiring in 2000. George loved the Lord and would always be found sitting at the kitchen table reading his bible. Falling asleep only to wake up and start over again. He was an active member of First Apostolic Faith Church under the pastoral leadership of HIS Bishop Cornelious Showell. There he served diligently on the Senior Usher Board until his health slowed him down. When he was not able to attend church, he would listen to his Bishop’s teaching on the radio every Saturday evening. Uncle George and Aunt Gail, as they were so affectionately called, were loved by their nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, family and friends, for their fatherly and motherly affections toward them. On any given day of the week or time of the day, they would be able to stop pass the house or call from near and far to talk and laugh with them. Of course, you would be asked if you wanted anything to eat, because what a cook he was. Par Excellent!!! The family favorites were Mac and Cheese, Okra and Tomatoes, Butter and Lima Beans and Spaghetti. There was even the community resident who were friends of the boys who would stop over for a meal. No Questions Asked!!. He was beloved in his community for his willingness to serve them in gardening, decoration home repair and transportation. . Boy oh Boy did he Love his Brothers and Sisters. For him, to be in their presence was like being a kid again. If there was any family gathering in Baltimore, Shulerville, Philadelphia or New York, he would be there to brighten up all with his Great Big Smile!! His important characteristics were his Smile, Quietness and Humilty. George Davis, Sr. leaves us to join his parents, James and Evelina Davis; four brothers, Clarence, Bobby Lee, Robert and Henry “Chingboy” Davis; three sisters, Gertie Mae Ramsey, Dosha Lee Green and Alberta Grissette; cousins, Harold, Jacob and Elonia Davis; brothers-in-law, Walden Ramsey, Marvin Armstrong, Levi Mitchell, Sr., and James “Chick” Riller, and sister-in-law, Loretta McConnell. At the same time, he leaves to cherish his memory, the Love of His Life, Jeanette Davis; three sons, George Jr., Clarence and Christopher; one daughter, Angie Walker; two daughters-in-law, Bernie and Shalonda Davis; eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth Jeanette, George III, Coortez, Krishanna, Nicole (Brian) Credle, Markel, Autumn, Naman, Destiny, Amar, Amon and Sepora; adopted daughters nieces, Irma McConnell and Priscilla Eaddy (Kenneth); sons/nephews, Frederick Ramsey, Sr (Robin) and Keith Ramsey; sisters, Agnes Mitchell and Sarah Armstrong of Shulerville; brother, James Davis, Sr., of Philadephia; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Jean Davis of Shulerville, and Clemmie Davis of Philadelphia; brother-inlaw, Wilton Green of Shulerville, and goddaughter, Christine McConnell; faithful and devoted nephews, Minister Carlton Moore (Barbara) and Deacon Herbert Turner, Jr. (Lorraine) and dear neighbor, Reverend Grace Hicks; and a host, and we mean a host of nieces, nephews, great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and neighbors along with a loving church family.
