George W. Crutchfield

GEORGE W. CRUTCHFIELD was born on April 26, 1931, in Brodnax,VA. George was the son of the late Willie Crutchfield and Lottie (Boxley) Crutchfield. He departed this life on Saturday, October 19, 2024, in Baltimore, MD. He was educated in the Brodnax school system; it was there he met the love of his life, his beloved wife, Maude Lee Elizabeth (Puryear). Married on August 9, 1952, their love story spanned 72 years of wedded bliss. It was always said, “If you saw George, you saw Maude.” They enjoyed cruising, watching television, family dinners, completing puzzles, and just spending time together. He is survived by his wife. Through their union, they were blessed to be the proud parents of five children. George is survived by his children, son Curtis. W. Crutchfield and his wife, Vivian, of Brandywine, MD, son William N. Crutchfield and his wife Brenda, and their daughter, Candice, of Woodbridge, VA, son Raymond Crutchfield and his wife Zula and their daughter Rachel of Upper Marlboro, MD, daughter Debbie A. McNeil, her daughter, Samantha Dixon and her husband, Mark, and their daughter, Nora of Baltimore, MD, and daughter, Mona A. Crutchfield-Nefferdorf, her husband, John, and their two sons, Brandon and Aiden of Baltimore, MD. He was preceded in death by brothers Erving Crutchfield and John Louis Crutchfield, and sister Lula Mae of Brodnax, VA. George is also survived by his brother, Harold Lee Crutchfield of Brodnax, VA, nephew, Bruno Crutchfield, sister-in-law, Nell Crutchfield, also of Brodnax, and a host of nieces and nephews of Baltimore, MD. George was an amazing man of many talents and pursuits. He was a faithful husband, amazing father, caring grandfather, and doting great-grandfather. Additionally, he was a scholar, a courageous soldier, a schoolteacher, and most importantly, a child of God. After graduating high school, he enrolled in the United States Air Service in 1951. During his service, he was stationed all over the world, including Wakkanai, Japan, Paris, France, and saw combat during the Vietnam War.He served his country for over 22 years, retiring from the military at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During his military career, his value for education deepened. While enlisted, he graduated from North Carolina State University and later received a master’s degree from Coppin State University in Baltimore. After serving his country, he then served his community as a math teacher in the Baltimore City school system. He was a dedicated and caring educator who retired as the Department Head of Mathematics at Fairmount Academy. While supporting his country and community, he always made time to serve his church. His earliest church affiliation was with Union Meherrin Church in Brodnax, VA. In Baltimore, he made church homes with Old Landmark Baptist Church and Ray of Hope Baptist Church, both of which he proudly served as a deacon. George W. Crutchfield was a good and kind man; he lived a life full of joy and happiness. As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed collecting coins and baseball cards and supporting his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. He is loved by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Well done, good and faithful servant!
