George W. Chestnut

George W. Chestnut, Sr., son of the late Nettie Mae Scott and Percy Jenkins, was born on August 23, 1933 in Minter, AL. George received his education in Minter, AL Public School System. He was well-known as "Hike", back home, because he was an avid walker. He walked everywhere he went. George loved the Lord, and gave his life to Christ at an early age. He later moved to Baltimore, MD where he joined Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church and became a dedicated and faithful Deacon. He was often heard humming and praying in constant communication with GOD. George married the "Love of His Life", the late Ella Mae Mills Chestnut. George and Ella were married fifty-four years and have four children: Lloyd Mills, Betty Glover, Joyce Chestnut-Elder and George W. Chestnut, Jr. George, Sr. was a devoted husband and loving father. He was dedicated, committed and compassionate to all his family and friends. He was an employee of Holdtight, then Esskay Meats for 32 years until the company relocated to Virginia. He then journeyed to SkyChef International as packing food attendant on flights. And finally to doing what he loved the best for years, Landscaping. "Daddy George", as he was affectionately called was a humble, hard-working entrepreneur. As George would say, "If there's a dollar to make...I am going to make that dollar." George was a mighty man of GOD. Daddy George loved to hunt. He often drove to Alabama to visit family; he returned home with squirrels, rabbits, dear and the like. Dad was an accomplished baseball player. He enjoyed playing and actually met Mommy Ella when she attended his games. He poured his love of baseball into his grandsons. He had a special gift of landscaping. he grew your lawn, planted your tree and gave words of wisdom simultaneously. George was a quiet man, but when he spoke his words were profound. He touched and blessed many lives and made a positive influence to everyone he encountered. His wife, Ella Chestnut and grandson, Erik Chestnut preceded him in death. George leaves to cherish his memory: two sisters, Alconnie Peavy (FL) and Earlene McConico (AL); one brother, John Scott (AL); four children, Lloyd Mills (Doris), Betty Glover (AL), Joyce Chestnut-Elder (late Quinton) and George Chestnut, Jr. (Jeanne) (CA); nine grandchildren, Sherrod Stokes, Advon Chestnut, Shalynn Mills, Delrod Brown, Nathaniel Mobley, Alana Hill, Eric Pearson, Keon Elder, and Alec Chestnut; ten great-grandchildren, Azariah Stokes, Josiah Mills, Kaiden Stokes, Aiden Chestnut, Cire Pearson, Cerila Pearson, Kendra Brown, Darius Brown, Brianna Smith, and Caden Coles, Austin Harding; a host of relatives and friends.
