Geneva Hurtt

GENEVA HURTT, born on April 14, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina was born to the late Rev. Lucious and Mrs. Lucious Williams. Later in life they made the move to Baltimore where her father was the Pastor and founder of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. This is where she was introduced to the Lord Jesus Christ by her religious mother and father.She was a member at the St. John Christian Community Church until she became ill and was unable to attend. She received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System but enjoyed life as a housewife raising her children who she cared for dearly. Geneva married the late Howard Hurtt and from that union ten children ten children were born.In 1977 she joined the Eastern Star, she was a member at the Guiding light Chapter 18, which she organized and brought in new members. It was there she met her closest and dearest friend, Marie Jeter.Mama Gen, as she was affectionately called, loved cooking and feeding her family and friends. Though she had many grandchildren who she loved dearly, she shared a very special bond with Rickey and Michael, who preceded her in death, Pamela, Candy, and Lil’ Freddie. She enjoyed making us laugh with a joke or a funny gesture. Even as she drifted from this life to the next to be with the Lord she had her entire family around her making us smile.Mama also loved watching her channel 13 stories, laughing and talking to the characters as if they were in the room. Mama made friends wherever she went, always there to lend a helping hand. She made us happy when we were sad, made us rich when we were poor, and just by knowing her made you want to be a better person. She will be missed by all who knew her.Almighty God in His infinite wisdom called her home on December 20, 2002 after a long illness.She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving and devoted daughters, Patricia, Carolyn and Irene; her loving sons, Raymond, J. Hurtt, Frederick and Edward; one brother, Rufus Williams; two daughters-in-law, Evelyn Hurtt and Eunice Speed; one son-in-law, Charles Hill; fifteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
