Gene Allen Kelly

God expressed His infinite love for Gene A. Kelly when He welcomed him into His eternal home to bask in everlasting joy and peace. Born August 4, 1948, Gene was the beloved fifth child of Effie and English Kelly, Jr. Gene received his education in the Richmond Public School System, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1967. Fueled by a passion for teaching, he pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Virginia Union University in 1969. Following his graduation, he embarked on a fulfilling career with Richmond Public Schools, dedicating himself to shaping young minds. For 31 years, Gene worked hard, leaving an indelible impact on his students at Thompson Middle School. Beyond his professional endeavors, Gene found joy in various hobbies and interests that showed his artistic and creative side. He had a hankering for tinkering and operating remote-controlled cars and planes. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing basketball, showcasing his skills on the court. He was a long-time fan of the Washington Commanders. Car racing held a special place in his heart, and he would often spend his time watching thrilling races on television. Gene shared a deep bond with his brothers, Robert Sr. and Clyde, and together they would attend drag racing events, creating cherished memories. Over the years, he found solace in the company of his beloved dogs Jake, Cricket, and Mello. Preceding Gene in death were his parents and his four siblings: James E. Kelly, Sr., Helen Kelly Lewis, Robert Kelly, Sr., and Clyde Kelly. Gene’s memory will forever be cherished by his loving family: two nieces, Brenda Lewis Broadnax (Reuben) and Robin P. Kelly; and four nephews, James E. Kelly, Jr. (Belinda), Robert Kelly, Jr., Anthony Kelly, and Bernard Kelly. Along with two aunts, Mae H. Gibbs and Yvonne K. Samuels. Additionally, he is survived by three grandnieces, Alexa K. Broadnax, LaKeisha Bragg, Sierra Kelly Carter (Shon), as well as two grandnephews, James Mosely, Jr., and Phillip Davon Kelly; along with his devoted cousins in Columbia, SC. Each of them holds a special place in their hearts for Gene, carrying his legacy forward with love and admiration. Gene’s memory will also be cherished by his dedicated fellow teachers at Thompson Middle: Cynthia S. Hampton, Joyce McFail, Grace Bowie, Joyce Watson, Vivian Crump, and Gloria Parker. eternal peace in the embrace of God’s everlasting love.
