Gail Powell

Gail Powell was born October 15, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Moses and Luella Mitchell, both preceded her in death. She was the youngest of 12 children. Siblings Charles, Horace, Alvin, James, Bobby, Loretta, Venzel (Leroy), Larry, and one other she never had the privilege of knowing, also preceded her in death. Gail spent her early childhood in Cleveland, Ohio and was educated in the Seventh Day Adventist Church educational system. Gail relocated to Newport News, Virginia in the mid 1960s with her parents, and in 1975 graduated from Warwick High School. Gail became a clerk typist at Fort Monroe Army Base, and was a Deaconess at Clavery Seventh Day Adventist Church. She later became a crossing guard for the Newport News Public School system. In 1984, Gail met and fell in love with Melvin Powell, Sr. at a church picnic. At the encouragement of her late mother-in-law Antoinette Powell, Gail and Melvin Sr. enrolled at Hampton University and completed one year of higher education. They were married on March 8, 1985. Gail relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in late 1980s with her husband and two children. She worked for Sinai Hospital, a LifeBridge Health Center, and medically retired in June 2019 after 28 years of service. Gail was called home by the Lord on September 5, 2019 after a long fought battle with cancer. Gail was an extremely sweet, hard-working, and generous woman with a great sense of humor. She enjoyed lending a helping hand to her friends and family. Gail also enjoyed spending her time shopping at her favorite stores, ROSS included. She had a true talent for finding the most beautiful, useful, and unique gifts. Gail was such a giver and gave away the majority of the items she would purchase, because she often thought of others and did her best to make everyone feel special. Gail leaves behind her beloved husband Melvin Powell, Sr., two children, daughter Celia Powell, and son Melvin Powell, Jr., two siblings, Ruth Jacobs and Eric Lane, her beloved family in Cleveland, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, Sinai Hospital family, and close friends whom she loved dearly.
