Frederick D. Smith

Frederick Douglas Smith went onto his peaceful rest on May 20, 2020. He was born on December 21, 1927 to the late Deacon George Smith and Ethel Cooper-Smith in Plymouth, N.C. After his mother’s passing, he was lovingly raised with his other siblings by Mrs. Captora Joyner Smith. Fred received his education in Plymouth, N.C. After graduation, he enlisted into the US Army, where he received a World War II Victory Medal and received an honorable discharge. After the military, he met and married the love of his life Mary E. Norfleet (proceeded him in death) of Plymouth, N.C., out of that union their bundle of joy, Joyslon M. Smith was born. Many years later he married a previous childhood friend, Irene Norman (proceeded him in death) with whom they shared an older son Robert L. Norman (proceeded him in death). Fred was a hard worker and good provider all his life. He worked as a maintenance man at an elementary school, then as a driver with Cockeye’s Sanitation Company, and as a delivery driver with Leonard Paper Company, where he retired after 17 years. Fred was loved by many. He was a giving man that would help anyone he could. He enjoyed life, playing checkers at times, laughing and joking with his infectious bright smile. Fred was a true sports lover who enjoyed baseball, football, basketball, and tennis. He enjoyed the basketball debates with his baby sister Ethel, and the special times spent with his sister Florentine at the Baltimore Orioles baseball and Ravens football games over the years. Fred had a special relationship with his Lord and Savior. He continued to Implement some lessons instilled by his parents as a child growing up, by reading his Bible and praying on his knees before going to bed. Fred leaves to cherish his memory: Two daughters, Dianne Perry of Greensboro, N.C and Joyslon Smith-Morgan of Baltimore, MD, seven grandchildren, Robert Norman Jr. of Largo, FL, Darlene Washington of Nashville, Adrian Norman of Las Vegas, NV, Antonio and Deborah Clagon of N.C., Alicia Woods, and Shana Gill (Ruffin) of Greensboro, N.C., eleven great-grandchildren and 22 great-great grands. One sister, Mrs. Florentine Downing of Baltimore, MD, four brothers, Mr. Thornton Smith (Shelby) of Roper, N.C., Mr. Richmond Smith (Sandra) of Plymouth, N.C., Mr. James Smith of Mitchellville, MD and Bishop Samuel Smith (Judy) of Plymouth, N.C. and a host of special loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was proceeded in death by: parents, Deacon George Smith, Mrs. Ethel and Mrs. Captora Smith, two brothers, George Monroe and Emmett Smith, five sisters, Beryl Garrett, Mary Louise Duren, Ethel Dozier, Catherine and Eleanor Ross, son Robert Norman and two special nieces Linarda Tyler and Floresa Ross. Fred leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Dianne Perry of Greensboro, N.C. and Joyslon Smith-Morgan of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren, Robert Norman, Jr. of Largo, FL, Darelene Washington of Nashville, Adrian Norman of Las Vegas, NV, Antonio and Deborah Clagon of N.C., Alicia Woods, and Shana Gill (Ruffin) of Greensboro, N.C.; eleven great-grandchildren and 22 great-great grands; one sister, Mrs. Florentine Downing of Baltimore, MD; four brothers, Mr. Thornton Smith (Shelby) of Roper, N.C., Mr. Richmond Smiyh (Sandra) of Plymouth, N.C., Mr. James Smith of Mitchellville, MD and Bishop Samuel Smith (Judy) of Plymouth, N.C.; and a host of special loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
