Freddie Gaskins

And so it was our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Freddie Lee Gaskins when her Lord and Savior quietly carried her from her labor to reward on Friday, June 29, 2007 at Sinai Hospital. Freddie made the transition from an old to a new and better life. Born unto the union of the late, Freddie Douglas Bowles and Minnie Williams, December 3, 1934 in Augusta, Georgia.She received her education in the public schools of Baltimore City.Under the loving guidance of her mother, Freddie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and this love for her Lord was nurtured and manifested throughout her entire life.Along with her mother, aunt, two sisters and brother Freddie at the age of six years old moved to Baltimore, MD to seek a better life.Freddie met and married Ralph O. Gaskins and was blessed with two daughters, Patricia and Janet. Longing for a spiritual connection in the big city, Freddie joined the membership with the family of Mount Hope Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Andrew Nance. She became very active in the fellowship of the church and was a member of the Gospel Chorus, Missionaries, Sanctuary Choir, and an Honorary Member of the Pastor’s Aides. Freddie remained an active and faithful member for over 67 years, until her death. Freddie, a very independent lady worked to provide for her family. She was employed at Towson State University from where she retired. Freddie also was employed at Mr. Dettor’s Restaurant, Acme Laundry and D&G Bus Company. In the later years of Freddie’s life she attended Levindale Day Care Center three times a week. Freddie cheerfully gave of her time to read the bible to the patients at Levindale. She also proudly read the weather report in the mornings there.Freddie forged long lasting relationships with friends and neighbors who sought her kind wisdom and encouragement always centered in God. No one was ever a nobody once you met Ms. Freddie. She nurtured her children along their Christian journey always encouraging them to do their very best and not be a “bench warmer” at church. Her household was a home of love, where she prepared tasty meals that were openly shared with neighbors and anyone that happened to come by. Holidays were the high points of these celebrations.For her endearing and compassionate life, we the family are grateful to Almighty God for our blessing of the best Mom, Sister and Aunt in the world.She was preceded in death by: her husband, Ralph O. Gaskins; mother, Minnie Williams; aunt, Leola Jones; brother, James Bowles; and sister, Betty Johnson. She leaves to mourn and celebrate her legacy of spirituality and loving memories and trust in God: two daughters, Patricia Ann Gaskins and Janet Ann Dunkley (Junior C. Dunkley); three grandchildren, LaResa Janet Washington (Darryl Washington), LaTonya Felicia Summerville (Louis I. Summerville, Jr.) and Sean Dante Dunkley; two great-grandchildren, Tiara Janay Montgomery and Juanya Tavon Washington; sister, Anna Mae Bowles; aunt, Geneva Easterling of Augusta, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends, Estelle Smith, Rosalyn Samuels and Maxine Pittman, Lelia Elliot and Mother Alberta Hope.
