Frances Katie Louise Harmon

Frances Harmon was born, Frances Katie Louise Butler on May 19, 1935 to the late Katie and James Butler. Frances, lovingly known as “franny” or “GG,” was born in Greenwood, South Carolina and came to Baltimore, Maryland as a young child. At age 76, she went home to be with the Lord on the morning of December 20, 2011, following a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Frances was the seventh baby girl of “the Butler Eight.” These eight women are/were known for their feisty personalities and fierce love of family. The eight sisters loved and nurtured each other and their families through all phases of their lives. Frances was educated in the Baltimore City School system, graduating from Carver Vocation Technical School with a license in cosmetology. She was known for her fierce Shirley Temple curls with her marcel curlers. She met Ernest Harmon, the love of her life and married in November of 1954. From this union she bore five children, Ernest Jr. who preceded her in death, Annie, Doreen, Cynthia, & Daisy. Her life’s work was raising her five children and caring for her loved ones. GG welcomed and embraced many others in her family, including her adopted daughter Michelle Simmons and special niece Stella Lee and nephews Clarence Mangum and David Hall. Her greatest joy was gathering her family and friends and feeding them. She is known across five states for her wingettes, steak fish and greens. Frances also loved buying scratch-offs and playing Keno. Frances had a gift for caring for others. She helped raise many children and nursed many of her family members as they convalesced. Later in life she reveled in being taken care of by her nurses (Doreen, Cricket, Lynn, & Monia). She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Harmon, Sr. and beloved son Ernest Harmon Jr. As well as, her mother and father Katie and James Butler and sisters; Mattie, Hattie, Lucy, Bernice, and Magnolia. To cherish her memory, she leaves “her girls” Annie, Doreen, Cynthia, and Daisy; Daughter-in-Law Gloria Wilson; Older sisters Minnie and Jimmy Lee. Her Grandchildren Christine, Mica, Major, Nicholas (bowlegs), Katie, Lanae, Andrew, Dontaye, Ernest 3rd, Duwand and Taiwan, Shane, and other great-grandchildren including her little buddy Roy’el Byrd. She also leaves a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews and two special friends Monia and Cecily
