Florence Amanda Mitchell

Florence Amanda Mitchell peacefully departed this life on June 14, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100, following a brief illness. Born on October 12, 1925, in Lancaster, Virginia, Florence was the beloved daughter of the late Herbert and Lillian Beale. Affectionately known as "Frye" by her family, she carried a spirit of warmth, resilience, and compassion throughout her long and meaningful life. Florence relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where she met and married James T. Mitchell. Their union was blessed with six children. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Tresia Smothers, Barbara Scott, and Rosetta Mitchell; her son, James T. Mitchell, Jr. and her grandsons, Thomas Smothers, Larry Scott and Don Scott. Florence dedicated many years of service as a domestic worker and later a custodian with Baltimore City Public School System. She was a faithful member of Christ Temple Church for many years and lived a life guided by kindness, generosity, and care for others. One of Florence's greatest acts of love was raising her grandson, Rodney, when his mother became ill and could no longer care for him. This selfless commitment reflected the compassionate and nurturing nature that defined her life. She was always willing to lend a helping had and offer encouragement to those around her. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Florence found joy in life's simple things. She treasured time spent with family and friends and was known for her strength, independence, and determination - and had her own way of doing things. Always active and on the move, she often walked several blocks each day, greeting everyone in her path with her signature phrase, "How you?! Alright!" She was kind to everyone and was well known in her neighborhood as "Mama," "Ms. Florence," or "Little Lady." Florence enjoyed good food, listening to gospel music, going on bus trips, dancing to the golden oldies, playing bingo with friends, and having her daily cup of coffee, while checking her lottery tickets. She also enjoyed watching her favorite TV show, The Price is Right, regularly. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Gloria Mitchell and Anita Mitchell; six grandchildren, Antonio Mitchell (LaNae), Anthony Mitchell, Shernice Madison (Troy), Eric Sheely, Rodney Mitchell and Brielle Mosby; seven great-grandchildren Cierra, Smothers, Richard Smothers, Jamil Scott Cummings, Aneesha Scott, Brandon Madison, Brittany Madison and Jameera Mosby, great-great-grandchildren; special friends Ms. Hilda, Ms. Elouise, and Mr. Al; and a host of extended family members, friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose lives were touched by her kindness and love. Though she is no longer with us in body, her legacy of love, strength. generosity, and unwavering faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was dearly loved, deeply cherished, and will be greatly missed.
