Florence Jones

Florence was born on October 31, 1952, (although celebrated November 2) in Edgefield, South Carolina, to the late Sammie Lee Morton and Carrie Ann Broadwater. She was educated in the Edgefield County Public School System and graduated from Strom Thurmond High School in 1971. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Old Piney Grove Baptist Church. In her adult years, she became a faithful member of New Light Baptist Church, where she served in the diaconate ministry. Florence moved to Washington, D.C., to live with her oldest sister after graduating to begin her working profession. Florence met the love of her life, Charles Jones, Sr., while there and was united in holy matrimony on April 27, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia. Three children were born from this union of 48 years: Charles Jones Jr., the late Miranda Jones Tyler, and Tameka (Jones) Brown. Florence was trained and had a 35-year career in the nursing field. She retired from Libbie Convalescent Center as a CNA. She loved gardening and tending to her plants and was the "soulful" cook for her children and grandkids, as they all loved her mac-n-cheese and pies. She was an avid walker and navigated her way around town without driving. Florence was a very wise and disciplined woman. She knew the importance of working hard to make a living for herself and her family. Florence loved her family and valued the importance of family sticking together. Florence was so thoughtful and giving to her loved ones and friends. She was a devoted caregiver to her husband in their golden years. Florence peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. She was preceded in death by husband Charles Jones, Sr.; daughter Miranda Jones Tyler; grandson Teon Tyler; and fourteen siblings, Annie Nelson, Julia Mae Morton, Gertrude Morton, Mary Louise McManus, Carrie Ann Morton, Ellen Morton, Johnny Lee Morton, Floyd Morton, Jeff Morton, Sammie Lee Morton, Jr., Raymond Morton, Irvin Morton, Willie Morton, and Art Broadwater. She leaves to cherish her memories: son Charles (Chameka) Jones Jr., daughter Tameka (Terrence) Brown, and step-daughter Tiffany Jones; 9 grandchildren, Darius Lee, Alexia Tyler, Kayla Tyler, DeAndre Harris, Taj Tyler, Deja Jones, Trinity Brown, Tera Brown, and Tamia Brown; step-grandchildren; Jamal John, Jermaine Jones, Jazmine (Willie) Haynes III, and Ebony Jones; one brother, Nathaniel Morton; brothers-in-law, Clyde (Vivian) Smith, John Earl Jones Jr., Gary Jones, and RB McManus; sisters-in-law, Alberta Morton and Rosa Lee Morton; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. Take your rest, Florence; a sweet daughter, loyal wife, loving mother, nurturing grandmother, dedicated aunt, caring cousin, and loyal friend until we meet again
