Evelyn Butler-Flamer

EVELYN BUTLER FLAMER, daughter of the late Avon and Evelyn Butler, oldest of two deceased brothers, Avon and Clarence Butler, and one surviving sister Betty Foster, was born on February 27, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Alexander Flamer. Evelyn's twelve year challenge with Alzheimer's disease ended on May 6th at home in Florida, where she had been residing and cared for by her daughter Michele and son-in-law Gerald. Evelyn was a devoted mother to her two children, Michael and Michele.Evelyn graduated from Frederick Douglass High School and completed several courses at the University of the District of Columbia. She was a service representative at C&P Telephone from 1950 to 1962. From 1962 to 1972 she was employed by the Carnation Comp. As a medical representative/ consumer consultant. Starting in 1973, Evelyn worked for several years in the administration offices of the University of the District of Columbia until retirement. Evelyn was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Baltimore and attended Heritage Fellowship Church in Reston, Virginia.Evelyn (“Hummer,” as she was affectionately known by family and close friends) was an intelligent and beautiful woman both inside and out. She was fun loving and embodied a love for life that was reflected in her enjoyment of family, friends, music and dancing. She was an avid reader and enrolled in various courses late in life that satisfied her quest for learning and growth. She cherished her time spent with her grandchildren Joanna and Christopher. Evelyn especially took pleasure in her trips to New York City, her favorite town. After Evelyn relocated to D.C. in 1963, her Baltimore ties to family and good friends remained a constant in her life. She delighted in her weekends around the River Park Pool and traveling back to Baltimore to spend fun time with her good friends the “Golden Girls.” Evelyn's spirit was filled with a resilience and strength that carried her through life with no complaints and no regrets-- just a love of life filled with gratitude to God and His Son Jesus Christ for her many blessings.As Evelyn embarks on her path to eternal life, she leaves to mourn: her children, Michael Winder and Michele Boyd; daughter-in-law, Carlyn Winder; son-in-law, Gerald Boyd; her sister Betty Foster; grandchildren, Joanna Thurston and Christopher Lee; stepgranddaughter, Monica McCullough; niece, Annette Johnson; nephews, Milton and Terry Butler; and a host of other family members and friends.
