Etta R. Bragg

Etta Ree Blackmon Bragg was born on April 23, 1937 in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late Curtis and late Bernice Blackmon. She was the second of four children, her brother James Cecil prodeeded her in death. On Sunday, December 25, 2016, Christmas Morning, Etta received her wings and now walks with the Lord. She received her early education in Lancaster, South Carolina. She moved to Baltimore and attended Dunbar High School where she graduated in the February 1957 class. She attended nursing school and in 1969 became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked as a nurse for over 30 years, spending the majority of her career at Provident Hospital in the Emergency Department. Etta met the love of her life, the late Matthew Bragg, when she was the chaperone for her younger sister's date. Matthew was the driver for the date. It was love at first sight. They were united in Holy Marriage on July 3, 1959 by Rev. Issac L. Williams. To this union four daughters were born, Marsha Diana, Fonda Denise, Etta Renee, and Melissa Eugenia. They celebrated 35 years of marriage before the Lord called Matthew to be with Him. Etta and Matthew shared years of wonderful moments and togetherness. They really loves traveling and fun times with the family and friends. Etta gave her life to the Lord at a young age in South Carolina. When the family moved to Baltimore, she joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She enjoyed attending the teaching arms of the Church and singing on the gospel choir. In 1989, she moved her membership to New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School secretary and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was also a member of Christian Education, Women of Faith, Senior Bible Study, Wednesdays Noon Day Bible Study, and a Missionary. She enjoyed calling the sick and shut-in to give words of encouragement and spiritual guidance in her own quiet way. Etta leaves to cherish her memories: four daughters, Marsha Leslie, Fonda Andrews, Etta Renee Johnson (Ronald), Melissa Bragg Lockett (Malik); six grandchildren, Rekeya Leslie, Ciara Chapman, Reanna Andrews, Richard Andrews IV, Matthew Bragg, Maya Lockett; one great granddaughter, Dalani Andrews; two sisters, Willie Mae McCoy (Wayman) and Betty Jene Blackmon. Three sisters-in-law Rosa David, Everline Walton (John), Brinda Fowlkes (Michael); one brother-in-law, Rev. Isiah Hurt (Betty); one uncle, Purnell Blackmon; two godsons, Allan Daughtry and Rev. Timothy Hurt; one godsister, Sarah Willard Scott (Joseph); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a very dear friend, Lottie Lee.
