Ethel Mae Woodson

Ethel Mae “Mommy Ethel” Woodson, 95 years of age, passed away peacefully, on Monday November 14, 2016 at Gilcrest Hospice Center surrounded by by her children. Ethel was born November 2, 1921 in Elizabethtown, N.C. to Eliza and Willie Wright. She was the middle child of three; with her brother Timothy Wright proceeding her in death. Ethel was taken by her father to live in Elizabethtown, N.C. Where she was raised by her grandmother, Anna Martin. As a child Ethel's formal education was secondary, because it was more important for her to contribute to the household. However, when she became older and moved to Turner Station, MD where she was among other family members from N.C. She attended night school in order to finish her primary education. She was united in Holy matrimony to John Woodson on April 28, 1950. This union was blessed with three children. Jacqueline Denise and John Steven. John Woodson proceeded her in death on October 22, 1998. Ethel was a former member of the Silver Saints as well as an active and contributing member of Mount Pleasant Church and Ministries, from back when it was a small corner church in Baltimore, Maryland to what it is today. For a time she worked in Baltimore at Comfort Springs factory, then Saint Frances as a cafeteria worker; part-time, then left to become a full-time mom. Ethel took pride in reading the newspaper every day and going over school work and forms for her grandchildren. She was a die-hard Orioles fan and avid fisherman. She would go on fishing trips with husband John, brother Timothy and her cousins Rosalee and Vi. She loved playing Pinochle and spades, and enjoyed the TV show, Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune. She loved the Blues and her and her husband along with other couples would go to cabarets to enjoy a nice meal with music. She dressed so beautifully taking special care in her appearance for special occasions when she would accompany her husband to his lodge's formal and holiday events. She loved her dog Fuji, working puzzles, none less than 1,000 pieces and find-A- Word books. She single handedly made Sunday family dinners and holiday meals – everything from scratch. She was known through the family and through the neighborhood for her yeast rolls and chocolate cakes, with many of her children's friends still stopping by for a roll or a slice, years after they had grown up and moved on to make their own families. Ethel found her most pride in spending time with her family, being a home-maker, a devoted wife, an exceptional mother, the best grandmother , friends and good neighbor. She was selfless when it came to her children and always put them first. She leaves behind the legacy that she wanted, where her children and children's children grew up to become productive adults. Ethel is survived by three sisters Odessa Quickley Elizabeth Wright, and Nettie Wright, her three children (Jacqueline, Denise and John Steve), 9 grandchildren. (Staci, Stanley, Wallace, Phillip Jon, Dominique Xenona, John, Amanda and Jonathan) and 4 great grandchildren )Diamonugue, Xernavien Sean, Xernay; and Kameron) along with a host of other relatives and friends.
