Esther Dorcas Green Miles

Mother Esther Dorcas Green Miles referred to by her family as "Queen Esther" was born 100 years ago, on September 14,1910 to the late Mrs. Rebecca Green Coy and the late Reverend John William Green. She was the second of seven children. Mother Miles was educated at the Richmond Public School located on Moore Street along with being home schooled by her father. Mother Esther Miles married the late William H. Miles on December 13,1925 at the Seven Pines Baptist Church. To that union was born six children. Mother Miles was an exceptional Woman of God having been blessed with talents and gifts from on high and full of wisdom. In her earlier years she was a midwife and has maintained a loving relationship with Doctor Pauline L. Stokes who she delivered years ago. Mother Miles was family oriented. She had strong family values and morals that she passed down to the family. One of her favorite quotes"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart". This picture was evident in the love and respect her family had for her and showed her. Mother Miles attended her grandchildren graduations,whether it was from kindergarten or college,she was there smiling and applauding. She witnessed the birth of one of her great- grandchildren. Mother Miles was always there when her family needed her,whether it was as a confidant,counselor,seamstress for wedding gown,prayer partner or simply to lend a shoulder to cry on,you could count on her. She encouraged her family to pray and seek God first. Mother Miles loved to travel. At the age of 99 she flew to Dallas,Texas to see one of her grandchildren graduate as a Registered Nurse. Her last trip would be traveling to Columbia,SC. with her daughters in May 2011 to surprise and witness her daughter, Alease inducted into the Hall of Fame. Before coming to the City of Refuge COOLJC,she was a member of the Seven Pines Baptist Church in Sandston,VA. There she served as a member of the Senior Choir,Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School,Superintendent,Assistant Teacher,Usher and Secretary of the Usher Board,Finance Auditor of Church and Assistant Pianist for the Sunday School Department. After having a vision of being called to deeper depth and higher heights in the Lord she visited the Refuge Church in May 1968. She was baptized in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ in September 1968 and received the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking in tougues on December 17,1969. She joined and became a member of the Refuge Church in January 1970. She was a faithful Senior Missionary and Lifetime Member of thr Women's Council. She served on the Usher Board as well as Secretary,Pianist for the Sunday School Department,and a Member of the Inspiration Choir. Mother Miles believed in working for the Lord. May the work I've done,speak for me. On September 18,2010,Mother Miles along with her family celebrated her Centennial birthday with 200 invited guests at the St. Paul's Baptist Church in Richmond,VA. Who can find a "Virtuous Woman? Truly we had one in own Mother Esther Dorcas Green Miles,our Queen! "Queen"Esther Dorcas Green Miles,100,of Highland Springs,departed this life on July 13,2100. She was preceded in death by her husband,William H. Miles and daughter, Gladys M. Hill. She leaves to cherish her loving memory,four daughters,Mary A. Pegeas,Dorothy M. Wright,Margaret A. Brown and E. Bernice Armstead,one son,William L. Miles,21 grandchildren,one devoted, Evelyn Atkins;72 great grandchildren;19 great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends
