Erma C. Hunter

Erma C. Hunter (affectionately) known as “Neddie: by family and friends was born on September 1, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Harry Patterson and Iva Roles Sligh. Erma's mother the late Roles Sligh, did a great job of raising her and her sister, the late Doris Johnson, in a Christian home. In later years, Iva was united in Holy Matrimony to Clarence Sligh. As a result of this union, Clarence was a well welcome addition to the family, as he became a great stepfather and step-grandfather. Erma was a dedicated and devout Christian and has worshiped at the Israel Baptist Church her entire life. On her father's great-grandmother, Martha Daniel, was a former slave and a very active member of Israel during its early days. Martha Daniels and Erma would sometimes attended Israel together. On her mother's side, Erma was the third generation to attend Israel. Erma's mother, Iva Sligh, was brought to Israel in her youth by guardian, Annie West, Although, Erma attended Israel during the time that Re. James H. Williams was Pastor she was baptized at the age 13 by Reverend Edmond D. Meade. Erma Christian Journey under Re, H. Walden Wilson, II and supported the many organizations/ministries/with her service. She served on the The James H. Williams Memorial Club, Senior Choir #2( which was later combined with Senior Choir #1 and became The Sanctuary Choir) where she served as the financial secretary, The W omen’s Day Choir, The Mass Choir, The Comfort Choir, The Outreach Ministry, Sunday School, The Silver Eagles Ministry (Senior Citizens), and Bible Study, She made many lifelong “family” friends at Israel. One of her closet friends was the late Sis Zula Patterson. Erma attended the Baltimore City Public Schools and completed her high school education by obtaining a General Education Degree. After receiving her GED, she chose to tutor others to complete their GED. She worked for a short time at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and retired from the Baltimore City Department of Education after 33 years. She was very compassionate, warmhearted, kind and caring person. If you needed a helping hand, a meal, a kind word or a friend, she would readily give it or be there for you. Erma met and married into Holy Matrimony with Walter J. Hunter in March 1945, of this union, five children were born. Erma was very much devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her extended family including in-laws, nieces and nephews. One of her greatest joys was in supporting her family in any way that she could. On Wednesday December 26, 2013 the Lord touched Erma C. Hunter and gently took her into his Loving arms enter into the realm of eternal peace Erma leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted husband Walter. J. Hunter, five children Joyce A. Thomas, Gregory M. Hunter, Roger B. Hunter, Martina G. Pack and her Husband, Joseph B. Pack, Wesley Hunter and his wife Diane Hunter; eight grandchildren: Lance E. Hunter, Valerie C. Hunter, Kevin Hunter, Angela M. L. Hunter, Dwayne L. Wooden, Darby I. Pack, Stephanie N. Hunter and Jonathan W. Hunter,eleven great-grandchild one great -great-grandchild; one brother-in-law,John Frank Hunter; one sister-in-law Delores Williams and a host of nieces, nephews friends, good neighbors and her Israel Baptist Church Family.
