Emma Johnson Welch

Emma “Tiny” Johnson Welch was born on June 21, 1923.She was born in Pinewood South Carolina to the late John Harper and Leila ”Lula” Gordon Johnson. Tiny, as she was affectionately known, departed this life peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William “Billy” Welch and William Rembert,Sr. Sister, Margaret J. Simpson;grandsons,Gerald and Anthony Pemberton;and granddaughter, Juanita Johnson. Emma attended Sumter County, South Carolina Public Schools. She migrated to New York in the late 1950’s where she was employed as an accountant for many years at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank. In the late 1980’s after her retirement, Emma and her husband, Billy, moved to Richmond, Virginia where they met many friends. They soon joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Ronald C. Taylor,Sr. Emma was an active member at Mt. Calvary in the senior ministry-Reaching Into The Ages, known as R.I.T.A. Emma leaves to cherish her memory, one son,William”Willie” Rembert,Jr. of New York City and two daughters, Bessie J. Pemberton and Roberta C. Johnson; a devoted nephew,Celester Johnson of Gardenville,Nevada;stepdaughter,Evelyn Brathwaithe of New York City;son-in-law,Arthur “A.P.” Pemberton,Sr.; 11 grandchildren; Keith Mapp,Arthur Pemberton,Jr.;Malaika Pemberton,Barbara Ann Hobson, Francine G. Puryear,Patricia C. Allen(Dayton),Brenda M. Conyers, Lorraine C. Johnson Robinson, Helen “Niece” C. Turner, Curtis Wayne Conyers,Sr. and Jamal Rembert;12 great-grandchildren;Kashmir Mapp,Victoria "Tori" Pemberton,Gerald Lewis,Jahmoi Walker,Riquan Walker,Kahlik James,Yolanda G. Alexander,LaKeeya M. Puryear,Nicole L. Conyers,Maurice T. Conyers,Jason D. Johnson,Sr.,and Curtis "CJ" Conyers,Jr.;ten great-great-grandchildren;goddaughters,Ann Coleman of New York City and Jacqueline A. Corbin;care assistant,Lola Bonds;friends and neighbors of The Reflections Apartment Retirement Community;and a host of other relatives and friends. Nane`,as she was lovingly called by many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren,died two days before her birthday. On Sunday, June 21st,family and friends gathered at a backyard cookout to celebrate her life of 92 years. She will be greatly missed.
