Legacy and Life Elsie Mae Marrow Lewis was born on May 3, 1940 to the union of Benjamin and Virgie Marrow in Virgilina, Virginia (a town in Halifax County). God in His infinite wisdom and power called our beloved Elsie into eternal rest on June 9, 2020 at John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell, Virginia. As a toddler, Elsie joined her extended family in Granville County and was reared by the late Norman M. and Earle D. Smith. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ellis, John Drewry, James, Albert and Andrew Smith, Marie Tyler and Martha Sims. Elsie received her formal education at Joe Toler High School in Granville County, North Carolina. She furthered her education at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Elsie accepted Christ as her Savior at Aaron Creek Baptist Church. She was later united with New Vine Baptist Church where she served on the senior choir for more than 30 years and was named an honorary member for her faithful service. Elsie also served on the church’s scholarship committee. After graduating from Saint Paul’s College in 1962, she began her teaching career in the Charles City County Public Schools. She retired in 1990 after 28 years of dedicated service. Elsie Marrow was united in holy matrimony with William H. Lewis on May 30, 1964 in Charles City, Virginia. Their union was blessed with two children, Pamela and William. In her leisure, she enjoyed fishing and traveling. She was a member of The Fish and Fun Club. She enjoyed the many trips and outings with her club friends. Some of her hobbies included collecting lighthouses, hummingbirds and stuffed animals. The lighthouses were beautifully displayed throughout her family room. She was also a member of the Charles City/New Kent Retired Teachers Association. She leaves to cherish her memory to a loving and devoted husband, William H. Lewis of 56 years; daughter, Pamela Ghee (Freddie) and son, William C. Lewis; devoted granddaughter, Kiana Ghee; sister, Doris Blackwell; brother-in-law Charles Lewis (Violet); sister-in-law; Clara Smith; a host of other relatives; family special friend, Doris Banks and caring friends.
