Ellen Marie Horde-Butler

And so it is with the soul of the youngest child of Summie and Lillian Horde,ELLEN MARIE HORDE, who was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 2, 1936, and called to peaceful rest on July 26, 2010. Ellen was loved and adored as only “the Baby” of an energetic brood of seven can be. Her brothers and sisters predeceased her, as did Summie and Lillian. She was a precocious and self-assured child who met the challenges of her school years effortlessly. So much so that as a special accelerated student, she graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, Maryland in 1952 at the young age of 16. After high school, Ellen’s academic and professional studies pursuits included what was then, Morgan State College; the University of Maryland’s University Hospital, where she completed training as an X-Ray Technician; and Baltimore City Community College, where she earned an Associate of Art degree that facilitated a fulfilling career as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist. During the course of her career, Ellen contributed significantly as staff in her field at what was then University Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kernan Hospital and Sinai Hospital, from which she ultimately retired. It was during the fifteen-year tenure at Sinai Hospital that, in 1996, she met and married her true soul-mate, Richard Butler. They were to share and enjoy an uncommon bond as husband and wife, which lasted until her passing. Richard remained by Ellen’s side as they enjoyed traveling to place she loved such as Brazil and Aruba that spoke to her inherited passion for the love of the water. Together they listened to great music… mostly jazz, light-heartedly challenged each other’s acurity… think “Jeopardy,” and generally enjoyed life as understanding and committed partners through sickness and in health. Ellen will be missed beyond measure by: her loving husband; her late sister Alice’s daughter, Michelle Shelton (Paul D.), whom she adopted as her own; stepsons, Richard, Jr. (Valeria), and Roger; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friend and former colleagues.
