Elizabeth J. Hughes

ELIZABETH "BETTY" JUNE HUGHES was born on August 7,1934, in Baltimore, Maryland. The only child of Margaret Johnson and Elliott Brown. She was the granddaughter of Grand Lady Ida Mae Johnson, one of the early leaders of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. Peter Claver in Baltimore. Betty was a proud graduate ofSt. Francis Academy, class of 1952.While in high school she met and later married Ellwood Pernell Hughes in 1953. Their union was blessed with three daughters, Glendora, Sabrina, and Belinda, two sons Ellwood and Tyrone. Her husband, Ellwood joined the United States Air Force and Betty followed him across the country and all over the world. As a military spouse, she traveledto Texas, California, France, Germany, and Libya. They returned to Baltimore in 1972 uporr Ellwood's retirement. / In 1974, Betty became ayoung widow with fivechildren, when her husband unexpectedly suffered a fatal heart attack. She subsequently entered the workforce as an employee of the State of Maryland. Sheworked at WEAA Radio Morgan State College and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She retired from State Services in 1999. Betty was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was active in numerous organizations: the Ladies Sodality, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St.Peter Claver, the Swinging Sixties, the Bereavement Committee, the St. Francis Xavier Gospel Choir, and worked with various charities. As a result of her experience as a military wife, Betty continued to enjoy traveling. The Hampton JazzFestival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Cruises, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands were some of her travel destinations. Betty loved to dance and have a good time. As long as she could walk she would dance. Anyone who knew her well, knew Betty could shop. She never saw a sale she could not resist. Her other interests included ceramic art, gardening, sewing, reading, doing puzzles and her family. She was devoted to and loved her family. Having all of her children and grandchildren together celebrating special occasions and holidays was her supreme happiness. So it was only fitting that on Monday, June 9, 2014, when she departed this world into eternity her children and grandchildren were with her. She leaves to carryon her legacy: three daughters, Glendora Cecelia Hughes, Sabrina Antoinette Lewis, and Belinda Lee Vaughan; two sons, Ellwood Pernell Hughes II and Tyrone Courtenay Hughes; daughter-in-laws, Sheron Hughes and Regina Hughes; son-in-law, Wendell Vaughan; six grandchildren, Sheronda, Takia, Tiffany, Kevin, Tanara and Amber; three great grandchildren, Mekhi, Sincere, and Cayson; brother-in-law, Herbert Hughes; two sister-in-laws, Helen Hughes and June Jenkins, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
