Edward Aiken

Edward Aiken was born May 17, 1940, in Richmond, Virginia, to the union of the late David Lewis Aikens, Sr. and Estelle Simms. He was educated in the Richmond Public School system where he attended George Mason Elementary and Armstrong High School. He held many jobs and positions in his career to include Store/Supply/Shipping Clerk Supervisor, Thalhimers and Architectural Hardware. Edward found both his profession and his passion in the field of security, serving with dedication at NationsBank, as a GSA contractor, with Wackenhut Corporation, and later at Hathaway Towers, where he eventually retired. He was a natural protector—steadfast, watchful, and always ready to take charge. Those who knew him will remember his strong presence, his sense of duty, and the way he loved giving direction with confidence. On September 10, 1960, Edward was united in holy matrimony with Esther Marie Green of Macon, North Carolina, a union of 65 years. From this union three children were born, Donna Marie, Karen Ann and Edward Christopher. Edward accepted Christ at a very early age, and joined Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. He loved the Lord and when asked how you doing today? his replies were “I’m here thanks be to God” or “This too shall pass.” Edward, fondly known as Ole Man, Daddy, Pop or Mr. Aiken loved fishing, playing bid whist and watching television (remote in hand ALWAYS). Edward transitioned from this life to his eternal home on Sunday, February 1st after battling multiple illnesses over the years. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Simms, Dempsey Aikens, David L. Aikens, Jr., and his sisters Mary Elizabeth Aikens Valladares and Thelma A. Johnson. Edward’s smile, over the eyeglass look, endless insight and wisdom were a blessing to his family and friends. He leaves to celebrate his life, cherish precious memories and continue his legacy; his loving/devoted wife, Esther M. Aiken, his devoted children, Donna M. Campbell (Gregory), Karen A. Aiken and Edward Christopher; grateful grandsons, Brandon (#1), Malcolm (#2) and Christian (#3), one huggable great granddaughter, Brandii Aiken, a bonus great grandson, Markei DeWitt, devoted lifelong friend, Kermit Whitlow along with a host of other relatives, and friends.
