Deacon Edna Chase

EDNA CHASE, the beloved daughter of the late Arthur Chase and Anna Johnson, was born on March 31, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life on Saturday, November 26, 2011. Edna completed her formal education in the Baltimore City School System at Carver Vocational Technical High School with a concentration in “dress-making.” She was later employed by London Fog and other similar companies where she continued to perfect her talent as a seamstress. She had many friends during her employment that lasted many years after her retirement. Edna’s only child, Leon N. Thompson, Sr. predeceased her. Edna accepted Christ at an early age. She later became a member of Sharon Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. James L. Moore. Edna loved her church and remained a faithful and devoted member of Sharon Baptist for more than sixty-five years, serving as a member of the J. L. Moore Birthday Circle and the Adult Christian Fellowship. The highlight of her service to the church occurred when she was appointed by Rev. Dr. Alfred C.D. Vaughn to serve as a Deacon in the life of her church. Edna loved the children at Sharon Baptist. Every week, up until the time of her illness, she would buy lots of good treats for all her kids to have each Sunday. She was a faithful participant in many of the activities of the church. Her main specialty was baking cakes for many church events, and for any member that would ask for her special cake. She was lovingly known as the “cake lady.” She had a strong faith and conviction in God, which allowed her to have a fighting spirit of survival during her stay at Augsburg Lutheran Home. Edna was truly a precious jewel. She loved her family unconditionally. She loved life and lived it to the fullest, but most of all, she loved her God. In her past-time, she loved cooking and sewing. She would shop for the best material to make her own clothing. She was also a great cook and was always collecting recipes for the next meal. She loved reading and keeping up with the latest news. Her favorite TV time was spent watching the Food Channel. She will be remembered by all her friends for her kindness, encouragement and support, always giving of her time to help others. Edna leaves to cherish her memory: a devoted and loving grandson, Leon N. Thompson; a great-grandson, Brandon A. Thompson; a loving sister, Irene Shelton; a devoted cousin, Eula Legett; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
