Edith Lucas Bowman

Edith Mae Virginia Bowman was born September 10,1912 in Doswell Virginia,in Hanover County to the late Edmond L. Lucas(Eddie Lewis)deceased June 1932 and Eliza J. Jane Anderson Lucas(Harriett)deceased April 1944.She married Willie Bowman on February 16,1952. No children were born of that union,but there are several godchildren."Ms. Edith",as she was affectionately known by everyone,was a loving mother figure,godmother,sister,aunt,grandmother,and friend. There was nothing that she would not do for her family or friends. Until she was unable to do so,you would be certain to see her in the church and visiting with her friends. An avid baker,she spent many hours in the kitchen and was lovingly called the "Cake Lady". Because of her love of baking,she's sharing a couple of her favorite recipes with you today.She accepted Christ at an early age and was always willing to serve in any capacity when asked. Edith attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beaverdam,Virginia,but after moving to Richmond,she joined Second Baptist Church. There she was member of the Senior Choir under the direction of Mr. Maurice Williams and Mr. Harry Savage. She was also a member of the E.F. Johnson Missionary Circle #9,The Golden Years Club,R-Cap Food Package,and the Memorial Choir. Edith was educated in the Richmond Public School system. She worked as a cashier manager for the cafeteria and gift shop at the Medical College of Virginia Campus Room. She was employed there for approximately 20 years until her retirement in September 1977.She was preceded in death by her husband,Willie Bowman:her brother Bazerill "Westly" Lucas;her two sisters,Alice L. Golden and Katherine L. Brown;and a devoted godson Tillman Love.She leaves with cherished memories a number of devoted and loving family members:godchildren,Mrs. Golden"Missie"Love(affectionately known as her daughter),Mrs. Ellen Rice,Ms. Laura lawrence,Mr. Winde lawrence(Marilyn):Rev.John Kinney(Tina);Tomeka and Tonya Maryland all of Virginia;"grandchildren",Charles R. Mines,Jr.(Annette)of Charlotte,North Carolina;Timothy L. Mines(Maria)of Atlanta,Georgia;loving "great grandchildren"Timothy Jr.,Aija,Marquise,Devin,and Taylor Mines;Morgan and Bryston Davis;nieces Julia Carroll,Shirley Moore,and Harriett Lucas;mother-in-law;Mrs. Cora Bishop;two sisters-in-law,three brothers-in-law;devoted care giver Mrs. Margaret Clarke and her wonderful nursing staff;neighbors Mr. & Mrs. Harold L. Lockett and Mrs. Katherine Blanding;other great-nieces,nephews,cousins,relatives,and a host of devoted friends.
