Earl Lee Harris

Henceforth is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not me only; but unto all them also that love His appearing.”Earl Lee Harris, son of the late Ned Harris and Bessie (Fowle) Harris, was born August 30, 1919 in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. God in His almighty wisdom saw that it was time to take our beloved one home on April 17, 2002, after a tough battle of failing health. After completing his childhood education in the Fountain Inn, South Carolina School System, he relocated to Washington, D.C. and immediately entered into the work force. Soon after, he began his 40-year career with Pennsylvania Railroad, later renamed Amtrak, where he retired in 1983. Early in his childhood, Earl was baptized and later joined Jones Tabernacle Church, where he served diligently as a member for 35 years, sharing in worship, fellowship and praising the Lord.In 1950, Earl was united in Holy Matrimony to Magdalene Young. Together Earl and Magdalene provided a loving and nurturing environment for their son Leon. A caring and loving man with a deeply sentimental spirit, he found much joy in the simple things in life-fishing, listening to the Baltimore Oriole games on his radio, and gardening, planting anything that grew, especially his tomatoes. A truly giving man, he gave family and friends many moments to cherish from his special sense of humor and dry wit. Kind and giving, Earl was always willing to listen, give a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on whenever someone needed him. Earl leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Magdalene; son, Leon; three grandchildren, Michael, Michele and Anastasia; four sisters, Louise Miller, Dorothy Hawkins, Daisy Jordan of Washington, D.C. and Eloise Gray of Virginia; one brother, Cleave Harris of Washington, D.C.; two brothers-in-law, John Miller and Bill Gray; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Harris and Jean Harris; one daughter-in-law forever in spirit, Doris Herndon Jones; a mass of nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and dear friends.
