Dwight S. Hawkins

DWIGHT SHANE HAWKINS was born on July 7, 1988, in Baltimore, Maryland to his late mother Christine Curtis and father Michael Hawkins Sr. His life was tragically cut short by the hands of Baltimore City Police officers on February 24, 2026, a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create an equitable society. Dwight was a GED graduate. He later in life achieved a certification in HVAC which landed him a job working for a hotel in downtown Baltimore. Dwight surrounded himself with a loving family that nurtured his growth into a strong, loyal and protective individual. He is preceded in death by his mother Christine Curtis, grandmothers Venetia Curtis and Myrtle Hawkins, uncle James Battle, and cousins Keon Newsome and Tony Holly. Dwight leaves to cherish his memory: twin daughters, Skyla Hawkins and Kyla Hawkins; son, Dwight Hawkins Jr. aka (Sonny); brother, Michael Hawkins Jr.; sisters, Shana Hawkins, Carnella Hawkins, Amia Hawkins and Summer Hawkins; nephews, Jamari B., Raphael McDonald, Kacen Covert and Quorfae; nieces, Rai’Lyn, Kaitlyn and Shanika; grandfather, James Curtis; and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and other relatives. He also leaves behind a special person, Kenisha Watkins . Dwight was a child, a father and a brother. He had experienced a life of trouble and trauma. He grew up with his sisters and brother at Grandma Peggy’s house with plenty of cousins, aunts, uncles and also friends. He attended Thurgood Marshall and Lake Clifton High School where he created a lifetime of memories with classmates. Dwight was a person who, nearly all his life, knew who he was since birth, yet when he became a father, his purpose changed to better decision making. He was a guy who protected himself, his children and loved ones. He learned from aunts and uncles how to survive on his own terms. He leaned on family throughout his life to help him grow into the man he was, an unconditional lover with loyalty and a sense of humor that lit up a room. Dwight’s story demonstrates a young man’s desire for improvement in society, a testament of a human spirit’s capacity for redemption
