Dorothy J. Johnson

DOROTHY JOSEPHINE GROSS (JOHNSON), the daughter of the late Columbus O. Gross and Ethel Johnson, was born in Catonsville, Maryland on December 3, 1914. After several months of illness, she was called to her eternal rest on August 4, 2005, while residing at Future Care located in Baltimore City. Dorothy witnessed 90 years of love, faith, joy, wisdom, respect, and strength. Dorothy received her education at the Banneker School located in Catonsville, Maryland. She joined the Grace AME Church at a very young age and has remained a member for many years. She was one of the Stewards of the Church, a position she held high. She was a long time member of the Senior Choir and was active until her health began to fail. She received many certificates and awards for her dedicated services to the Church. On September 14, 2003, she received an award for being the oldest member of Grace AME Church, and just recently received a beautiful "VASE" from the Women of the Church. In the year 1953, she was married to the late Clarence Johnson until his death in 1975. Dorothy had one son, the late Charles H. Gross, who recently passed on. She had one sister, Catherine E. Franklin; and one brother, Columbus O. Gross both of whom have previously passed on. Dorothy was a very good cook. She worked for several families in the Catonsville area as a domestic worker, and served as a homemaker. She had a green thumb for plants and had a wide variety of them. She was an avid bowler, a game she loved, and came in first place many times. Most of all she liked the daytime soap operas and could name them one by one. She was very thankful to have lived to be a ripe old age of 90 and still be in her sound mind. Dorothy loved the praying hands and put them on everything she could. Left to cherish her memory are: four stepdaughters, Rosalee Scott, Gertrude Brooks, Laura Claiborne and Elaine Hubbard and husband Amos; stepson, Charles Johnson and wife Norma and son; granddaughter, Delores Gross and her children; two grandsons, Charles Gross and Keith Gross; daughter-in-law, Nitiya Gross; nephews, William S. Franklin and his wife Virginia, Kenneth Gross and his wife Olivia, and Gerald Gross and his wife Marie; niece, Christy Ramos and family; sisters-in-law, Katherine Gross, Ruth Johnson, Evelyn Johnson, and Mary Carter; brother-in-law, Charles Johnson; cousins, Dorothy Dorsey and Patricia Miller; and great grandchildren, cousins, other family, and many friends.
