Dorothy Ann Dabney

Obituary Dorothy Ann Washington Dabney was born June 2, 1937 to the late John Franklin and Henrietta Ann Wilkerson Washington. She departed this life peacefully on September 3, 2023. She was affectionally known as “Dot.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Matthew Dabney; son, Matthew Dabney, Sr.; granddaughter, Taneisha Danielle Dabney; grandson, Michael O’Neil Akrie, Jr. and brother Raymond Franklin Washington, Sr. Dorothy joined Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Kent, VA at an early age, accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a dedicated member at Rising Mt. Zion until her health started to decline. She was a member of the choir in her earlier years, hospitality ministry leader for over 20 years and an usher for over 50 years, she led the ministry as president for over 25 years. Dorothy was educated in the New Kent County School system and graduated from George W. Watkins School in 1954. Dorothy married Joseph M. Dabney of Goochland, VA on January 18, 1958 in Jersey City, New Jersey where they lived for several years before relocating to New Kent, VA where she grew up. From this union they had 6 children; Marzene, Marvin, Mary, Marietta, Matthew (deceased) and Melinda. Dorothy was outstanding at cooking and baking, she enjoyed cooking meals and baking for her family, friends and guests. She also loved to travel, especially on cruises. She lived a rewarding life. Most of all she loved God and her family, she was the family matriarch. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories 2 sons, Marzene Dabney, Sr. (April), Marvin Dabney, Sr. (Samantha); 3 daughters, Mary Akrie (Michael), Marietta, Melinda Greene (Dwight, Jr.); 15 grandchildren, Marvin, Jr., Mykhelle (Andre), Marshai, Chenay (Darius), Ashley (Oliver), Monae (Lloyd), Marzene, Jr. (Monique), Joseph, Sr., Matthew, Jr. Britney (Justin), Tedmund (Melissa), MeKayla, Dwight III, Jasmine and Jasmine (Terrell); 19 great-grandchildren; 1 stepdaughter, Vivian McDonald; 2 stepsons, Calvin Hopkins (Gwendolyn) and Joseph Turner; 6 step-grandchildren, Tonia, Monique, Kimberly, Michael, Angela and Morgan; 8 step-great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Edna Conway, Louise Washington, Viola Washington; 2 brothers, James Washington, Sr. and Bernard Washington; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, church family and 2 dedicated caregivers; Victoria Hernandez and Kendra Hill.
