Dorothy Mae Campbell

On Friday, August 19, 2011, Dorothy Mae (Jacobs) Campbell passed peacefully form this life at the Season’s Hospice in Baltimore, Maryland into the Arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Dorothy was born in Rose Hill, North Carolina on April 14, 1929 to late parents Luzenia Jacobs and Willy Boney. Her early years were spent in the care of her maternal late grandparents John and Addy Carr. She and her sister the late Queen Esther Jacobs relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina with their mother to attend secondary school. She graduated from the Williston Industrial High School in Wilmington in 1947. Dorothy was very proud to have been selected as the Key Note Speaker for her 51st Class Reunion in 1998. During her senior year at Williston High she met her future husband, the late Foster Burnett Campbell, when his baseball landed, fatefully, in her front yard one day! In 1948 they were married. Their fifty year union was blessed with the births of five children: Sandra, Gloria, Shirley, Foster Jr. and David Campbell. Dorothy was dedicated to her family, and, by example, taught her children and grandchildren many enduring values to sustain them through life. The first and most important being to Love the Lord and Know that He Created Them To Be Great! Dorothy had many interests. Some of her favorite past-times enjoyed alone or with her children and friends through the years included: reading, Weblos and Boy Scouts Den Mom with young David, bingo, seemingly endless jigsaw puzzles, bowling and her neighborhood newspaper route with young Foster Jr. Professionally, Dorothy attended Nursing school at Montebello State Hospital, Baltimore, where she completed Practical Nurse training and subsequently received her Licensed Practical Nurse credentials at University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. She spent many years in Geriatric Nursing and Private Duty Nursing, primarily with the elderly. Once retiring from nursing, her entrepreneurial spirit prompted her to operate her own business when she became owner of the Campbell’s Transportation Service, Inc., servicing several neighborhoods and public and private schools in Baltimore City and County. Dorothy’s civic affiliations included, most notably, Meals on Wheels and canvassing foe children’s charities and the American Cancer Society. Being very enterprising, Dorothy was known for making extra holiday money by baking her highly anticipated apple pecan pound cake for many years. She also operated her own Mary Kay consulting business along with daughters, Gloria and Sandra- and achieved the high honor of being recognized by Mary Kay Corporate for becoming a Diamond Star Red Jacket Consultant! Dorothy was ambitious and energetic; and loved by her family and great friends whom she leaves behind. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Campbell Lynch, Gloria Campbell and Shirley Campbell; two sons, Foster Campbell, Jr. and David Marc Campbell; three grandchildren, Stefan Christopher Campbell, Shana Campbell Sowa and Candice Michelle Dixon; two great-grandchildren, Shawdae Kiera Jarvis and Richard Trevis Sowa; one son-in-law, Thomas Lee Lynch; and one grandson-in-law, Richard Keith Sowa. Dorothy was preceded in death by her youngest grandson, Trevis Emanuel Campbell.
