Doris Bernice Carter

Doris Bernice Carter, daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy Taylor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 24, 1930. The Lord called her home early Sunday morning, April 19, 2015 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Doris received her education in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Public School System. Doris received Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of High Way Church of Christ in Baltimore, Maryland. On August 27, 1995 by Christian experience, she joined Bibleway Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastoral care of Pastor Womack, and currently Rev. Eugene Holmes. At an early age she met and married the love of her life Eli Carter Jr., known to many as “Mr. Buster”, and moved to Baltimore City, where she lived until her passing. Out of this union were five daughters, Cynthia (who preceded her in death), Francine, Nonie, Bertha and Yolanda. Then the big surprise, finally a son, Brandon. Even before having her own children, Buster's nieces and nephews had her heart, in particular her nephew/godson Bryan who was considered as their son and still is. The list goes on as all who met and visited in her home became part of her family. She loved hard and was easy to get to know. Her biscuits with apple butter were to die for. Many a day her children raced home from school to be first at the lunch table, Bryan beating them them most of the time. There were those special times when they were treated with creamed chipped beef or that special cheese we've all come to know, melted down and served over toast. Then she sent them back to school on time. “Ms. Doris", “Mom Doris”, "Cousin Doris”,"Aunt Doris" “Grandma” or “Grandma Doris”, as she was known to many, had nothing but encouraging words to push you along to be your best. If it was within her means to help you through a situation, what was hers was yours. You may have heard her say at any given time, “As long as my frig and cupboard are full, I'm happy!” Meaning she was able to offer her assistance. The Encourager in her would say, “I am not able to do or know your lessons, but I can sit here and turn the pages with you as your learn your lessons.” Mom's joys were simple but pleasurable, her family first, then sitting with the “Golden Girls” on the front step, going to her crochet classes at the Waxter Center, meeting with the Bibleway Seniors and navigating from the front passengers seat in whoever's car she found herself traveling with on any given day. Riding a horse, flying in a plane, and taking a ride on a motorcycle had always been a dream of hers. She expressed just the other day that her children made it possible for her to fulfill all her dreams. Ms. Doris leaves a legacy to cherish her memory: her children, Francine Allender (John), Nonie Matthews (Carlton), Bertha Moore, Yolanda James and Brandon Carter; godson, Bryan Delaware (Estelle/Sweetie); seventeen grandchildren, thirty-nine great -grands, two great-great-grands; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and all of her “adopted children” from Mura St., and abroad (you know who you are). We will always remember Mom Doris, Mrs. Doris, Aunt Doris, etc. for her loving and giving spirit, her words of encouragement and her love for all, be it family or friend.
