Donald Matthews

Donald Kavon Matthews II, born on February 14, 1959, in Baltimore, Maryland, was called home to eternal rest on April 2, 2026, after an extended illness. Affectionately known as Donny, "White Owl," and "Coot" to his family and friends, he was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. Donny will be remembered for the deep and lasting impact he made on everyone he encountered Donny was the beloved son of Donald and Valerie Matthews of Baltimore, Maryland, and the brother of Monique Matthews and Jeri Gbangbalasa, all of whom preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory four children from his union with Thelma "Kandee" Matthews: Donnielle Kavona Matthews, Dennis Kevin Matthews, Dorian Kendall Matthews, and Demitria Kay Matthews. He was also a proud grandfather to his two cherished grandsons, Desmond Kavon Matthews and Kaedin Demetrius Gardner. He is survived by his brothers, Darien (Lakeah) Matthews and Damian (Kate) Matthews. Donny also leaves behind five aunts, two uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who delighted in his joyful spirit. He shared a special bond with Angela Brown, who was like a sister to him, and with whom he enjoyed many restaurant visits and shopping outings. Donny grew up in Walbrook Junction and was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, attending Walbrook High School and Westside Skills Center. He had a lifelong passion for cars, often working on vehicles throughout his neighborhood and for family and friends. He found joy in building engines and discovering the "why" behind mechanical issues. His love for automobiles was especially evident in his treasured 1964 Ford Mustang, which he proudly owned for many years. Donny retired from the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) as a diesel mechanic after 20 years of dedicated service A man of deep faith, Donny faithfully served in ministry at Greater Faith Hope. Tabernacle, UHC, under the leadership of Bishop Millard Cox. He was also a talented singer who found joy in all genres of music. Donny's love for his children was immeasurable. He created lasting memories through family vacations and many shared adventures. He was a gifted cook who took pride in preparing special recipes, often grilling and happily sharing his meals with his children and their many friends. Those who knew Donny will forever remember his infectious smile, his talkative spirit, his booming laughter, his steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, and his unwavering commitment to spreading love and kindness. He possessed a rare gift for lifting others' spirits, leaving an unforgettable impression on all who crossed his path. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, Donny's spirit will continue to inspire and uplift. May his memory be a blessing, and may we honor his legacy by carrying forward his love, compassion, and faith in all that we do.
