Dollie E. Nobles

Dollie Eleanor Nobles, daughter of the late John and Emma Yates, was born on January 30, 1921, in Ernul, North Carolina. At birth she looked like a doll baby, therefore, her parents felt the name Dollie was most appropriate. When Dollie first met Joe in her youth, she told her sister, Erlia Mae, that one day, she would marry him. Joe and Dollie were married a couple of years later and remained married for 65 years and from this union seven children were born. Dollie was an excellent wife and mother. She always gave praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and instilled in her children to be good Christians and to help others along the way. After attending the public schools in North Carolina, Dollie continued her education at Douglass High School in Baltimore City and majored in art at the Community College of Baltimore. During her free time, she became consumed in creating art and consequently many friends and family members received her beautiful paintings and works on paper. Dollie was a full-time homemaker until her children were all in school. She worked side-by-side with her husband Joe on weekends at the concession stand at Druid Hill Park. She became a full-time employee at Casual Corner, and later was the Supervisor of the Alterations Department for Stewart’s and Company. After retiring from Stewart’s, she worked part-time at New Directions for Women. Dollie served in many organizations including the Democratic Club of Cherry Hill, and the International Training in Communication Organization. She was one of the original organizers of the Garrison Hill Community Association. Dollie worked diligently in various neighborhood functions trying to make the community a safe haven for everyone. She communicated with political leaders and officials to assist the community. Her efforts to help others was untiring and evident in her volunteer work with the Foster Grandparent Program, working with young people who were in need of love, understanding and encouragement. Her volunteer efforts continued with Baltimore City Public Schools by assisting students in raising their interest level in getting a good education.Dollie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherry Hill for twenty-eight years. She truly enjoyed greeting and welcoming people into the house of God. She believed that she was called to the ministry of serving as an usher, and participated in the community outreach program of the church. When her husband joined St. Timothy Christian Baptist Church she often attended services there and soon decided to be by her husband’s side in worship. Dollie immediately became an active member in St. Timothy’s Church life. She served as an usher, worked with the courtesy ministry and became a deaconess. She started the youth ushers ministry and made the ushers skirts. In addition, she made covers to place over the pulpit furniture for communion Sunday. Dollie initiated fundraisers to supply the church with new air conditioners and hymnals. She truly loved serving the Lord and even during her many illnesses she managed to spread the word of God thereby being a blessing to others. After a lengthy illness, Dollie Eleanor Nobles departed this life on June 10, 2002. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband Joe Nobles, Sr., five sons, Marvin, Sr., Joe and Christopher, of Baltimore, Maryland; Linwood, of Glen Burnie, Maryland; Erskin, of Detroit, Michigan; two daughters, Emma Clark, of Richmond, Virginia and Deborah Nobles-McDaniel, of Baltimore, Maryland; daughters-in-law, Sarah, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, Martha, Brenda, Barbara, Wanda, Mary and Gertrude Nobles, of Baltimore, Maryland; two sons-in-law, Milton Clark, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia and Ervin McDaniel, II, of Baltimore, Maryland; twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry, Sr., of glen Burnie, Maryland and Charles Yates, of Baltimore, Maryland; and one sister, Verna Sowell, of New Haven, Connecticut. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friend Virginia Goodwin and a very special friend Daisy Covington who continued to show her love for Dollie by calling on a daily basis to check on her throughout her illness.
