Derrick A. Fowlkes

Derrick Antoine’ Fowlkes, Sr. was born June 13, 1979 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He sudden departed this life on November 10, 2006. He was the son of Lois Ruth and the late Wilbert Fowlkes Jr. One brother Colin also precedes him in death.Derrick accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized on November 3, 1996 at First Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ Inc. He was not an active member when he transitioned, but he constantly reminded family, friends, and all who would listen that God and he maintained an open dialogue on a daily basis.Derrick was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, completing his education at Southern High School on June 5, 1998 with his high school diploma. He held several jobs, but he was most proud of his last job with Monument Pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician.Derrick was family oriented and a devoted father. He put great thought into the activities planned with his kids during their time together. He spent his time instilling morals and principles, just so they knew that their future possibilities were endless. He volunteered at their schools, and you were sure to find him checking homework nightly. He affectionately referred to them as “My Monkeys”. Is kids adored him and will miss him dearly.Derrick was a great lover of sports, especially football. You could usually find him on Dunbars’ sideline in his personalized jersey rooting on the Poets, and he even traveled with them to away games. You may also find him stationed in front of the television to watch the weekly games and cheer on his favorite teams. He enjoyed hanging out with the fellas, as he usually greeted them with, “What’s up son?” And during these times you were sure to find his big brother Gerard at his side being his protector”. His love of life and people touched the hearts of all who know him.Derrick greeted everyone with his warm infectious smile. The doctors often marveled at his unfailing character and resilience as they asked him, “How are you doing today Mr. Fowlkes?” He would always respond, “I can’t complain!” even in the most trying of times. He was referred to as “The Best Patient by the nursing staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital whom cared for him so. He displayed courage, strength, and determination, especially seen in his final days. Derrick has touched the lives of all who knew him and will be sincerely missedDerrick is survived by his mother Lois Fowlkes; one son Derrick Jr., two daughters Asianai and Derriyell; five brothers Anthony, Dante’, Shawn, Gerard, and Jermarl; three sisters Ericka, Mygeesha, and Renata; two aunts Kim Fowlkes and Jenny Humbles; three uncles Sterling Humbles, Tyrone and Raymond Fowlkes; the mothers of his children Chabria Thomas, Constance Simms, Tanyell Gray who will keep his legacy alive; his best friend Antonio Spell, Jr. and a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
