Denise V. Howard-Johnson

Denise HowarD-JoHnson, the only daughter of James and Geraldine Howard, was born on October 29, 1962, in Portsmouth, Virginia at the Naval Hospital. Denise answered God's final call home on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at The University of Maryland Hospital surrounded by loving family members, at the age of 52. As a young girl, Denise attended James Mosher Elementary School and Calverton Junior High. She graduated from Western High school in 1980. Denise graduated from Lincoln University in 1984 with a BS in Political Science. After graduating from Lincoln University, in 1986, she began her career in the field of Social Services. Her employment started with the BARC House as a Counselor from 1987-1988 followed by Job Corp. Her last position held was with Goodwill as Employment Counselor. Mike and Denise were joined in marriage on December 29, 1990. Her Christian journey began when she joined Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev Samuel Ray. She attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She loved reading the Bible and doing Bible Search and Crossword Puzzles, and she read the Bible in its entirety twice. She and her husband studied the Bible together and became members of an on-line study group. "Ho-Jo" had an impeccable smile that just seem to light up the room whenever she was around. She had a warm and loving heart and would do anything to help if it was in her power to do so. That is why she whole-heartedly loved her job at Goodwill. She was great at helping others in their job performance, insuring that clients and others did their best. She was very diligent at her tasks. She was very outspoken, charismatic and held a gregarious personality. She was honest in her opinions, no matter if you were in agreement or not. You could count on her for speaking the truth and also having a sympathetic ear. She was strong willed and spoke her mind. Our sweet Nicey had a great sense of humor that was shared with the people she loved. There was a sense of compassion for those in need. She made time for those who needed her attention. She never forgot about you. In her spare time, she loved watching movies, surfing the internet, laughing to a good joke or just catching up on the latest life events. Nicey fought long and hard through her illness. Now it is time for her to rest. She is no longer struggling. She will be truly missed, and now we understand that she is at peace. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Michael Johnson; devoted parents, James (JD) and Geraldine Howard; two brothers, James Howard, Jr. and Lester Howard; two stepdaughters, Cherelle Johnson and Brandi Johnson-Daniels; four grandchildren, Anaijay and Sydey Johnson, Cory, Jr. and Jordyn Daniels; two nieces, Latavia Watson and MaKayla Howard; two uncles, Tony Howard (Washington, DC) and Victor Howard (Norfolk, Va.); four aunts, Kay Collins (Norfolk, Va.), Marian Williams (Norfolk, Va.), Phyllis Doggett and Cecelia Stevenson.
