Delores Lorraine Colbert

Delores Lorraine Scott Colbert the eldest of five children born to Emma Johnson and late Alfred Johnson Jr., was born on May 13, 1934 in Baltimore Maryland. She was called home in the early morning hours on April 26, 2007 after a brief illness. Delores was affectionately known by those who knew her as “Lois.” Delores always had a strong sense of family and community. She lived her entire life in East Baltimore, receiving her formal education in Baltimore City public schools and graduating from Dunbar High School.She married her childhood sweetheart, the late Leroy Colbert Jr. and of this, union four children were born Gary, Maurice, Beatrice and Alicia. Delores began her Christian life as a child in Christ United Methodist church. She joined Faith Lutheran Church as a young adult and was a faithful and devoted member there until her death. Delores life was a living testimony to her Christian beliefs. She was a community activist participating the Build Organization and displayed exemplary community service. Delores worked at John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health for over forty years, retiring from her position in 1996. She was a spiritual person and so loved the Lord. As a devoted Christian, she attended Faith Lutheran Church. Delores was a humble person and loved to laugh and have fun. She was devoted to the people she loved and enjoyed nothing better than being with members of her family and her many life long friends. If she could not be with others in person, she would be sure to speak with them by phone. She was an excellent family historian. Delores also found pleasure in reading, doing crossword puzzles and traveling. She often took excursions to other states and especially enjoyed trips to Atlantic City. For over thirty years, she resided on Bond Street where she loved having family and friends around her. It seemed liked she knew everyone in East Baltimore. Her children always found an open door at home when life presented bumps in the road. She provided overnight or after school care when needed for her three old grandchildren. In her later years, she reared Joshua and Jasmine while attending to the needs of her ailing mother. When you visited Delores at her home you could not leave without her offering you a plate of food or a cup of tea. She was generous and very kind heart. Delores’ husband, father, an uncle Reginald Smalls, grandmother Clara Smalls, an aunt Bernice Lattimore, and sister Clara Jackson, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish tender and loving memories: loving mother, Emma Johnson; beloved children, Gary Colbert, Maurice Colbert, Beatrice Fleming (Sugarlump) and Alicia Colbert (Peaches); a devoted son-in-law, Dwight Fleming; six wonderful grandchildren, Markeisha Crawford, Camp Springs, Maryland, Maurice Colbert Jr., Ryan Brown, Seattle, Washington, Joshua Bruce, Shelby Fleming and Jasmine Colbert; three beautiful great-grandchildren, Jaylen Wright, Milaun Colbert and Aijay Crawford; two spiritual daughters-in-law, Ruthie Kelly and Karen Smith; and a host of extended family and multitudes of friends.
