David McCray

David McCray departed this life on March 8, 2002 after undergoing a short illness. David was the son of the late Joe Ray and Hattie McCray-Coley. David accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age at Rock Hill Baptist church in Sumter, South Carolina. He received his early education at Rock Hill Elementary School in Stone Hill, S.C. David moved to Baltimore in the early 1950’s. He continued his education at Dunbar High School and joined the First Charity Baptist Church as a member under the pastorate of Reverend T.C. turner. David worked at various shipyards in Baltimore, Md., including the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Potts and Callahan Construction Company. In 1962, he married the late Gladys Morgan-McCray and out of this wedlock two children were born. David was a loving father and a good provider. He was strong, yet gentle and loving. If you did not know him, he was tall, kind, family oriented, funny and an easy going-kind of guy, who always had something important to say or to do. He handled his business until his illness set in. He always appreciated the small things in life and was not conformed to the ways of the world. He always had something nice and funny to say, and when he laughed, he lit up the world. He enjoyed listening to his radio, watching the baseball game, collecting watches and biting his children on the cheeks. He was a cheerful and loving man. He will truly be missed.To cherish his memory, David leaves: an adoring and loving son, David McCray, Jr.; a devoted daughter, Phyllis Morgan; one grandson, Joshua Anderson; two granddaughters, Tiffany McCray and Myesha McCray; two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Mykia; a loving and devoted sister, Eartha Weeks; a mother-in-law he was fond of, Julie Logan; three brothers-in-law; Leroy Weeks, William and Richard Logan; three sisters-in-law, Julia Thomas, Roxie Washington and Levator Williams; six Aunts, Lucille Thames, Ruby Blair, Fannie Wiggins, Lorena Snow, Effie McCray and Susie McCray; one uncle, Robert Blair; ten nephews, James, Johnnie Roosevelt, Danny, Ernest, Warren Le Jr., James-Lee, Thomas and Ronnie; thirteen nieces, Rovena, Aleen, Tina, Rita, Brenda, Michele, Deitress, Ophelia, Lois, Lil, Patricia Ann and Dorothy; two great-nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends BEYOND THE SUNSETBeyond the sunset, O glad reunion,With our dear loved ones who’ve gone before;In that fair homeland we’ll know no partingBeyond the sunset for evermore!
