David C Foster, Sr

David Collis Foster son of Sophrano L. Foster and the late George M. Foster, Sr. was born May 15, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland. David was the third oldest of eight children. He transitioned this life suddenly on January 12, 2015, after a brief illness. David, “Collis”, “Mr. Foster”, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. From a young age, his parents instilled in him the value of hard work. He obtained a Bachelors degree and earned credits towards a Masters degree from New Antioch College in Baltimore. David combined his sense of hard work with education to help build a good future for himself. David was long time resident of Bolton Hill, his neighbors would often come by to engage him in a conversation on politics and race. He would oftentimes dominate the discussion. Then he would engage them in a game of chess where he would dominate that as well. David's intellect and wisdom were beyond measure. His quiet, yet powerful demeanor touched the lives of many. David, in the prime of his life, met and married Jyl. From this union David, Jr. was born, who recently graduated from Harvard University. David also has a daughter, Easton who in addition to English is also fluent in Chinese and Spanish. David was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and always wished them the very best. David had great love for his own children and also the hundreds of children whose lives he greatly influenced while working in the Baltimore City/County Public School Systems. For over 30 years, David devoted his life to being a champion for children. As an educator, he worked tirelessly as a mentor to both his colleagues and students. He was relentless. Every child he came across he touched their life in a meaningful way. David was convinced that working with children and families was his purpose. Throughout his longstanding career in Baltimore City Public Schools, David received numerous awards. He will also be honored by his current school Furman L. Templeton Academy on National Public Radio (WYPR), his favorite media outlet. In addition, the school has instituted the annual “David Foster – Fostering Award” for the top-teacher that demonstrates fostering excellence in children. Personally and professionally, David has truly been uplifting and an inspiration to so many people. We are blessed to know that his legacy will continue. David leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Sophrano L. Foster; his father, George M. Foster, Sr. (deceased); two children, David, Jr., and Easton; two brothers, George, Jr. and Darnell: five sisters, Rosa, Virginia, Wanda, Margaret and Gloria; twenty-six nieces and nephews, twenty-seven great nieces and nephews, one great-great-niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
