Darryl A. McKenzie

Darryl Anthony McKenzie, the youngest son of the late Frank H. McKenzie, Sr., and the late Theodora A. McKenzie departed life peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2019 after a lengthy illness. Darryl was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. He was a proud graduate of the Gwynns Falls Elementary School, Lemmel Middle School and Baltimore City College High School. After high school he matriculated to Morgan State University where he graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. While in college he was a member of the wrestling team and later became a life member of the MSU Alumni Association. With his degree in hand, he was able to secure employment with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works as a Chemist I. Due to his expertise and work ethic, he was promoted several times and worked as a Chemist III until his health problems forced him to seek a disability retirement after 28 ½ years of faithful service. In his youth, Darryl enjoyed and engaged in several sports including football and wrestling. He was also an amateur boxer and loved the sport so much that later in life he became a videographer for local and regional boxing events. Darryl was an avid jazz enthusiast and BBQ grill master. When his sons attended his former alma mater, Gwynns Falls Elementary, he returned as a volunteer who handed out late passes, supervised the safety patrol program, was a member of the Parent Teachers Organization, assisted with the Boy Scouts of America program and provided mentoring services to male students who needed encouragement and direction. Darryl was at the school so often that many parents thought he worked there and when they learned that he didn’t, they solicited his help anyway. Darryl leaves to cherish his memory, Chantelle L. McKenzie, his devoted wife of twenty years; one daughter, Tiffany K. Dailey; two sons, Chanard W. Dailey and Darryl A. McKenzie; one grandson, Rashade S. Thomas, Jr.; one grand-daughter, Skylar C. Dailey; cousins, Patrick A. Ford (Retta) and Patricia A. Winkler; mother and father-in-law, Gloria E. and Clarence A. Wayman; extended family members: James A. Bush (Audrey), Glenda Gorman-Parker, Jerome V. Spears (Debra), Clarence (Nason) Spears, Jack R. Gorman, Leslie Harris, Don W. Gorman; and a host of other relatives, neighbors, former co-workers and friends.
