Daniel Smith

DANIEL EDWARD SMITH was born on January 3, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Amy and James Smith. After a brief illness, Daniel was called from labor to reward on December 21, 2013. Danny was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. After high school Daniel joined the Merchant Marines. After a short time Daniel decided to join the U.S. Army where he tirelessly served his country. Danny accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Whitestone Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a member of the choir until he was called home. Danny enjoyed singing on the choir. On the first Sunday Danny could be found at his second church home Cornerstone Baptist Church. Danny met and married his forever love Ella Edwards-Smith. Danny and Ella were happily married until she was called home to the Lord on April 22, 2008. Danny loved to talk about his days shining shoes down at the Joseph E. Bank store, selling papers on North Ave. and Harford Road and working as a concierge at Oriole’s Park, Camden Yards. Many days you could find Danny at the Elks Lodge in East Baltimore on Harford Road as well as the Elks Lodge on Madison Avenue. More recently Danny spent his time at Easter Seal where he was elected King for the Day and Prom King. Danny was a talented dancer and pinochle player. Danny was a jovial character with a big heart. Danny’s quick wit and banter always kept everyone entertained and laughing. He had a compassionate heart and loved everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Danny was always heard saying, “I have never met a stranger.” Always dressed in a suit and a coordinating hat, Danny never hesitated to pull a dollar out of his pocket and freely share his wealth. The following siblings preceded Danny in death: brothers — George, David, Oliver, Jacob and Joseph Smith; and sisters — Martha Johnson, Arie Thomas and Elinor Spriggs. Danny leaves to mourn and cherish his loving memory two sisters, Amelia Hershaw McDaniel and Jenesta Williams. Although Danny never had any children he had godchildren — godson, William Owens; goddaughters, Sylvia Smith, Towanda Tyler and Jean Malone; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.
