Cynthia Jean Brown

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Cynthia Jean Brown was born on May 24, 1948, in Covington, Virginia. She peacefully departed this life on September 4, 2025, at VCU Medical Center Hospital after hearing the call of her Heavenly Father and taking her flight home. Cynthia was preceded in death by her loving parents, Robert Perry Nowlin and Dorothy Ann Jackson-Nowlin and her beloved husband Arthur Alfonso Brown Sr. Cynthia was educated in the public school system and graduated from Huntington East High School in Huntington, West Virginia. Following her graduation, she attended and received her Bachelor's of Nursing degree from the Charleston General School of Nursing in Charleston, West Virginia. Cynthia had a deep love and passion for healthcare and nursing. She began her nursing career as an ICU nurse at MCV/VCU Medical Center and later worked as a hemodialysis nurse. She was also one of the founding partners of Acute Dialysis Incorporated. After 43 years of dedicated service in the nursing profession, Cynthia retired, having touched countless lives through her compassion and care. In May of 1973, Cynthia proudly joined the United States Air Force as Second Lieutenant and served on active duty until 1975. She later continued her service by joining the Virginia Air National Guard in June 1981, serving faithfully until her retirement on January 1, 2001, with the distinguished rank of Lieutenant Colonel. On July 4, 1975, Cynthia married her childhood sweetheart, Arthur Alfonso Brown Sr. They shared a loving and devoted union for 39 beautiful years. Together, they raised their children in a Christian home filled with faith, love, and joy. Cynthia and Arthur enjoyed hosting their annual pig roast and Christmas parties,traveling, family vacations, and most of all, being together. Cynthia was a vibrant member of her community. She was actively involved in the Red Hatters Club, Aging with Grace and The Professional Divas, among other social and service organizations. Her life was marked by compassion, joy, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. A woman of deep faith, Cynthia was a dedicated member of Quioccasin Baptist Church, where she served faithfully after Dr. Andrew Mosely Jr. became pastor. She sang joyfully with the Choral Ensemble, the Senior Choir, and participated in various church ministries. Cynthia simply loved people and cherished spending time in fellowship and celebration. Cynthia leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Tiaisha Sprouse (Michael); her son SFC Robert C. Brown (Danielle). Her loving grandchildren TaMani Brown, Robert C. Brown II, Jaida Thompson, Layla Brown, Caysen Brown, and one great grandson Tylann Brown. Her beloved sister Alicia Divers (Pierre); loving nephews DeMetri Nowlin, LeRon A.D. Childs, her beloved niece Audra Childs (LeRon). Her loving Aunt Ellen Penn, (Augustine “Spud”), Loving Uncle Randall Jackson, (Caroline). Loving stepchildren Arthur Brown Jr, Anthony Toliver, Nekeeia Brooks, and Daniel Dotson. A host of loving cousins and friends. Special thanks to her Guyandotte Church of Christ family Cynthia leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
