Curtis N. Adams

CURTIS NAPOLEON ADAMS, SR., affectionately known as "Curt," was born March 28, 1931 in Waycross, Georgia. He was the youngest of six children born to the late Joe Nathan (J.N.) Adams and Viola Virgil Adams. Curtis was educated in the Waycross public schools. Upon graduation from Center High School, he attended South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University) in Orangeburg. There he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1953. He was awarded his Dental Degree from Howard University in 1962. In July, 1954, Curtis was inducted in the U.S. Army. He served in the medical division in Nuremburg, Germany for two years and it was during this time that his interest in the dental profession evolved. While attending graduate school at Howard University in 1956 and before entering Dental School in 1958, he met and married Jean Marie Wallace, a student nurse at Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing (now Howard University College of Nursing). From this union two children, Cheryl Denise and Curtis Jr., were born. Curtis was a devoted family man who not only placed a great emphasis on family and family reunions, but he instilled in his children the importance of obtaining a good education. He also knew that education not only took place in the classroom, but in traveling and in observing how the rest of the world lived. He traveled with his family across the United States and to many foriegn countries, including Canada, Haiti, Jamaica and Western Europe. Curtis dedicated thirty-eight years of his professional life to the field of dentistry. During these years, he has held the following positions: 1963-1968-Staff Dentist, Rosewood State Hospital 1963-1986 - Staff Dentist, Provident Hospital 1968-Staff Dentist, Provident Neighborhood Health Center 1985-Consulting Dentist, Crawford Retreat Nursing Home 1985-1991-Consulting Dentist, Northwest Nursing Home 1986-1991-Staff Dentist, Liberty Medical Center 1993-2006-Clinical Staff Administrator, Washington Village Medical Center He held memberships in the following professional organizations: The National Dental Association, The American Dental Association, The Maryland State Dental Association, The Baltimore Dental Society, The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners and The NorthEast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. Curtis was a member of the following fraternal organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha and Chi Delta Mu Professional Fraternity (President 1988-1990). He held life memberships in the following organizations: The National Dental Association, The NAACP and the South Carolina State University Alumni Association. He has volunteered and served on the Health and Welfare Council of Central Maryland, The Model Cities Policy Steering Board and The Big Brothers of Central Maryland. Curtis has also received many community service awards including: The 1988 Alumnus of the Year from South Carolina State College and the Govenor's Citation for service to the community in honor of his expression of Maryland volunteerism and tireless efforts. Curtis' legacy of his contributions will live within the lives of those he touched. Church was an important part of Curtis' life. For more than twenty-five years, he was a member of Heritage United Church of Christ, where he served as President of the Church Council and also in the capacity of trustee. Before his health began to fail, he enjoyed participating in the Monday afternoon Soup and Sandwich Bible Study Group. In addition to Jean, his loving wife of forty-seven years, Curtis leaves to cherish his memory: two children, Dr. Cheryl Denise Adams-Williams and Dr. Curtis Napoleon Adams, Jr.; two sisters, Madame Ola Adams and Dr. Dorothy Adams Peck; brother, Professor Samuel Adams Sr. and one adopted brother, Deleavis Johnson; three sisters-in-law, Thennye, Elenora and Inez Adams; daughter-in-law, Dr. Melanie Adams; two granddaughters, Curtira and Emily; two grandsons, Connor and Curtis III (Trey). Curtis was preceded in death by his brothers, James Sr. and Dr. Carlton Z. Adams, Sr. Curtis will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
