Deacon Curtis Joseph Johnson Jr.

Our beloved Deacon Curtis J. Johnson, Jr., 97, was born March 20, 1920 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Emma Johnson and Curtis Joseph Johnson, Sr. He enlisted into the United States Army, January 19, 1944 and provided an honest and faithful service to his country as a marksman. After serving his term, he was honorably discharged in 1948, making him a Veteran in the World War II era. Upon his departure from the military, he relocated to Dennison, Ohio and made a life for himself. He worked as a construction worker and truck driver. He was married twice, coincidentally, both wives were named Thelma. Unfortunately, no children came from either marriage. He joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful member. On November 9, 1997, he was honored as a Deacon of that church and served proudly for many years. He was also a member of the Masons. He lived a very full and active life enjoying many hobbies such as hunting, fishing and his particular favorite boating. He purchased his own boat in which he carved all the names of all his nieces. In 2007, he once again relocated to Richmond, Virginia this time. He still stayed active and soon joined St. Paul’s Baptist Church on Creighton Road. He remained a member until he could no longer attend. God blessed Curtis with being a wonderful uncle and great-uncle who was loved by all. He brought laughter and joy to everyone who graced his presence. Curtis had a tremendously big heart and to know him was truly to love him. Deacon Johnson waited on the Lord to call his name and he took God’s outstretched hand and walked through the pearly gates of heaven on May 8, 2017. He is preceded in death by his brother Pascol Brown; sister Ernestine Spraggins; both his wives, nieces Lucille Whitmore, Marie Saunders and Sally Washington; a great-niece, Irene Cotton; great-nephews Robert and Richard Washington and a great, great-niece, Teneasha S. Tillman. For as many as he goes to join, he is survived by just as many. The gift of love he left behind will always be treasured. He is survived by his caring great-nephew, James C. Washington, Sr. (Julia) and family; adored great-nieces, Iris E. Hundley and family; Mary Ann Murray and family; and Anjanette M. Whitmore; a host of great, great-nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow church members and friends.
