Curtis Andrew Bass

Curtis Andrew Bass, affectionately known as Kirk to family and friends and Pop-Pop to all his grands, was born on August 10, 1947 in Nashville, NC to the late Bruzer and Caressa Bass. The youngest of nine children, Kirk grew up surrounded by love, family and faith. After a lengthy illness, he peacefully entered eternal rest on Friday, December 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at home. Kirk received his early education in the North Carolina Public School System. In 1954, he moved with his parents and siblings to Newport News, VA. In 1967, he relocated to Baltimore, MD, where he made his home alongside his older brother and built lifelong roots. A mad of hard work and many talents, Kirk held several jobs throughout his life. He worked for many years on the assembly line at General Motors, later becoming a maintenance technician for an apartment complex. His skillful hands were always ready to serve - painting, building, repairing and making home improvements for family and friends. There was little he couldn't fix and he took pride in using his gifts to help others. Despite Kirk's illness he found joy everyday with his visits from his family and dedicated care by his daughter Tracey and son-in-law, Damon. He loved his family and told anybody who would listen about his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's accomplishments. He enjoyed attending their birthday parties, graduations and wedding celebrations. The bond he shared with two of his sons-in-law, Darren and Damon was unbreakable. His family will miss him dearly. Kirk especially cherished his role as an uncle and was lovingly known as the "favorite uncle" to all his nieces and nephews. His quiet humor, steady presence and generous spirit made him easy to love and impossible to forget. At the age of 78, on June 29, 2025, he rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized - alongside one of his great-granddaughters and witnessed by his children and grandchildren at Sought Out Redeemed Church. From that moment forward, he proudly declared his commitment to Jesus and dedicated his remaining days to walking in his renewed faith. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bruzer and Caressa Bass; his siblings, Lucressa Royster, Elvige Bass, Annie Nottingham, Elsie Noel and Eloise Cooper; his beloved daughter, Joyce Odom and three grandchildren, James Jones, Diamon and Damone Hough. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Phyrn Willoughby (Darren), Tracey Hough (Damon), Tiffany Bass (Sylvia), all of Baltimore, MD and their mother, Marie; Colleen Motley (Deon) of Bellflower, CA, James Parker (LaVonda) of Plano, TX; his grandchildren (14), Kristal (Robert), Kelsey, Keilah, Kimberly, Darren, Jr., Tequoia (Darrel), Damontre', Courtney, Ciara (Deion), Lenoid, Aaron, Derrick, Shamika and Tamika; his great-grandchildren (29); his bonus grandchildren (10) and bonus great-grandchildren (15); his sisters, Alverta Berthea of Hampton, VA, Angie Williams (Rivers) of Williamsburg, VA, Eunice Gilchrist of Richmond, VA; lifelong close and special friends: Eleanor, Butch, Gunt, Thel and Bernard and a host of nieces and nephews he adored, along with many other relatives and friends who will forever carry him in their hearts.
