Cornelius "Tony" Irvin Thompson

A Life Well-Lived Cornelius “Tony” Irvin Thompson, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on December 30, 1954 into a loving family to the late Dazarie Thompson and Willie Montague. He was the middle child of nine siblings. He grew up in Church Hill and was educated in the Richmond Public School system. Tony was baptized at an early age and was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church. He later enlisted into the United States Marines Corps. where he proudly served his family and country. He toured in Japan and other countries. Upon completion of his military duties, an honorable discharge was presented to him. Tony was employed by the Defense General Supply – Bellwood where he retired after 30 years. He was a doting dad and devoted grandfather where he would happily get his grandbabies off the school bus daily. He was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Tony was a person who said what he meant and meant what he said. He was a man who kept his word, while he quietly helped others. The family will miss his sense of humor, calls on schedule: holidays, birthdays and a few that were random. Although he was a man of few words, his presence spoke volumes. He was the middle of nine children, the one who connected the oldest to the youngest. He was so cool, calm and peaceful. We will remember Tony as a person who loved, protected, provided and served. A loving brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved his “spirits” which really made him comical and the life of the party. Tony was strong, proud, a Marine, always a Marine. Tony was also preceded in death by his grandmother Estelle Curtis; nephew, Charles S. Thompson III and nieces, Ireca Morris and Alicia Drake. He leaves to cherish his memory to his family: life long companion, Jacqueline Smoot; son, Cornelius Smoot; daughters, Racquel Powell and Tameka Smoot; grandchildren, Ke’Shaun, Cornesha, Shanyia, Marvin, Antonio, Patricia, Kayla, Taylor, Taniya, Madyson and Amari; great-grandson, Damien; four brothers, Charles Thompson (Annette), Willie Thompson (Shirley), Jonathan and William Thompson; four sisters, Yvonne Jones (John), Charlene Jefferson (Percell), Sheila Waller and Mary Greene (Earnest); a host of nieces, nephews, friends, one devoted, Sheridan “Danny” Johnson Sr. (Angela). Tony, you have left us with many memories to be cherished. We are so grateful for the time shared with you. Until we meet again!
