Cornelia C. Carter

CORNELIA CLEMENTINE CARTER (JUDY) was born on March 1, 1938 to Minnie Lee Allen. She was adopted and raised by her grandparents James and Mattie Allen. She departed this life, with a smile, on April 22, 2014. In 1957, she married Walter Lee Carter and five children. Cornelia was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated with honors from Carver Vocational Technical High School. While in high school, she worked in Dr. James Pair's office as an office assistant. After graduation, Cornelia worked as a bookkeeper at the former Meyer & Thalheimer toy store, the Furniture Fair on Gay Street and the former C&P Telephone Company. She worked at various other jobs throughout her life, however her main occupation was as a mother. At a young age, Cornelia was a member of St. John's AME Church. She sang in the Jr. Choir, and often sang solo, her favorite song "Come Ye Disconsolate." She also attended a church which was around the corner from us. We called it "Sister Johnson's Church", but she let us organize the services. Cornelia was the eldest, and she taught us songs, said prayers, and we read from the Bible. Sister Johnson played the piano and preached. She often let us arrange a special service and get all of the adults to come. Cornelia loved to sing and dance, and she could do both very well. She was very pretty and loved to dress in the latest fashion. She was friendly and outgoing, she made friends wherever she was. Most of all, she was family oriented. She loved to cook on special occasions and have her children and grandchildren come around. Judy did not have an easy life, but she got joy out of her life. She never complained nor blamed. If she was angry, it didn't last long. She lived life her way and she loved you whether you liked it or not. She never had in-laws, they were mom and pop and her sisters and brothers. They were all family. Her long-time companion John Thompson's mother, sister and niece were also her family. She was preceded in death by: her mother, Minnie Lee Allen; grandparents, James and Mattie Allen; her daughter, Yolanda; and her long-time friend and companion, John Thompson. She is survived and mourned by: her children, Marsha, Walter (Lacie), Tamera (Wayne) and Rodney (Kyna); sister, Laray (Frederick); sisters-in-law, Laura Mae, Shirley and Linda; brothers-in-law, Raymond and Randy; twenty-four grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
