Clarence Rudolph Mebane

Sometimes God comes to us and whispers our name softly so that we can hear. On Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Harbor City Hospital, God gently called Clarence’s name and he quietly followed Him into His Kingdom. On October 29, 1935, Clarence Rudolph Mebane was born to the proud parents of Hattie and Willie Mebane in Ahoskie, North Carolina. He departed this life on Thursday, July 18, 2002 after a brief illness at Harbor City Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Clarence moved from Ahoskie, North Carolina to Baltimore for better job opportunities. Clarence was employed by the University of Maryland Hospital until his retirement in 1987. He also served on the Deacon’s Ministry of New Antioch Church. Sonny, as he was affectionately called by everyone, loved people, helped everyone often, putting himself last. He has such a joy for life that he lived it to the fullest. He loved outdoor activities such as motorcycle riding, fishing, and hunting. His quiet demeanor and quiet sense of humor encouraged everyone. As a father, God created one unique man. Sonny also loved his Pastor. Often times when Bishop Wilson had a preaching engagement, he would go and investigate the area days in advance to make certain the environment was safe for Bishop to go in. Sometimes he would actually take a chair, place it in the street, and sit in it to make sure that the bishop had a parking space. Those who knew him will truly miss him.He leaves to cherish his memories: four loving daughters, Betty Johnson (Robert Johnson), Sarah Robinson (Lawrence Robinson, Sr.), Ida Bracey and Tanisha Mebane all of Baltimore, Maryland; two sons, Gary Jackson (Linda) of Ahoskie, North Carolina, Clarence Gasoway of Baltimore; three sisters, Dorothy Mebane (Oscar) of Norfolk, Va., Minister Hazel Lee (Eli) of Norfolk, Va., and Thelma Mebane (Henry) of Colerain, North Carolina; two brothers, Jimmy Mebane (Adele) of Norfolk, Va., and Al Mebane of Ahoskie, North Carolina; eight grandchildren, Derek Deloatch, Fernando Best, Jr., Brandon Bracey, Lawrence Robinson, Jr., Shannon Robinson, Gary Jackson, Jr., Krissy Jackson, and Katherine Mebane; special friends, Deacon James Blackwell, Deacon Ann Smith and Mr. Alton DeLoatch, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and co-labors in Christ.
