Clarence Maiden

Clarence Maiden, retired Principal of Catonsville Junior High School, died Thursday, September 26, 2002, at Sinai Hospital. Clarence Maiden, better known as “Reds” to close friends and family, was the fifth of six children born to Sarah and William Maiden in Mt. Royal, NJ After graduating from Swedesboro H. S. he earned his B. A. degree in Mathematics from Morgan State College. He often reminisced that these were some of the best years of his life. At Morgan he was well known for abilities in track and on the football field. He served as Vice President and President of the Student council, and was Class President. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He earned his Masters Degree in Guidance from the University of Pennsylvania and did further post-graduate work at Johns Hopkins University of Maryland. His teaching career began at Carver Elementary and high School in Towson, where he taught mathematics and served as Vice Principal. He was a dedicated educator. A yearbook from Carver thanked him for weaving “a tapestry pattern of wisdom and fair play not found in text books alone, but also in the strength of unity, cooperation and purpose.” After integration, he was transferred to Towsontown Jr. High School, then to Woodlawn Senior as it’s first Vice principal, and from Woodlawn to Catonsville Junior High as its Principal. Clarence Maiden enjoyed working with students and colleagues and during the early years of integration he made many speeches (which he did not like doing) and talked with colleagues about ways to smooth the progress of integration. In 1981, after more than 40 years of service, he retired from the Baltimore County school system. He remained active, playing golf and bowling. He and his wife traveled, especially cruises, to many countries. Mr. Maiden did crossword puzzles in ink, enjoyed poker with his friends, and remained and avid fan of football and baseball. Bus t most of all he treasured his relationship with his family, especially his grandsons. He will be sorely missed by his wife, Norma, his daughter, Cathy Johnson, two grandsons, Roosevelt Adams, III and Jason Lamar Adams; his son-in-law, James W. Johnson, Sr., all of Baltimore, Maryland; and nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial donation to the Scholarship Fund of Psi Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
