Deacon Clarence Edward Gilliam

Obituary On October 4, 2022, our devoted and beloved Clarence Edward Gilliam, left his earthly home … bound for Glory. Clarence, the son of the late Lee and Mary Johnson Gilliam, was born May 18, 1947. Clarence grew up in the Newtown Community of Richmond, during which time he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. While receiving his education from Richmond Public Schools, a 1967 graduate of Maggie Walker High School, Clarence met his wife-to-be, Jacqueline “Jackie” Thompson Gilliam. It was through that relationship Clarence became part of the Washington Park Community. Clarence was always a ‘working man.’ His most recent employment experiences included General Electric, Southeastern Medical Supply, and McKesson. Clarence would share funny and interesting stories from his work experiences. Although retired, Clarence continued working wherever and whenever needed. Clarence was married to Jackie for forty-five years before her passing in 2011. Their union included their love of Christ and was blessed with two children, Traci and Eric. Clarence’s numerous interests included: a car enthusiast, race car fan, he enjoyed westerns, traveling, bike riding when able, and always a “handyman.” His interests always included the needs of family, friends, and the church (physically and spiritually). Clarence was active in various capacities of St. John Baptist Church. He was Chairman of Deacon Board, drove the church van, Prayer Ministry, Teen Sunday School teacher, Men’s Chorus, Food Bank, Handyman ministry, and on St. John’s Family and Friends Day, Clarence spearheaded the neighborhood bike ride. Deacon Clarence Edward Gilliam was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Thompson Gilliam. Clarence is survived by his daughter, Traci E. Gilliam; his son, C. Eric Gilliam (Catherine); six grandchildren, Shawn D. Gilliam, Shaneka D. Gilliam, Jacquline S. Gilliam, Tranardia D. Becton, Kiera S. Gilliam, and Maya G. Gilliam; seventeen great-grandchildren; two brothers, James L. and Paul V. Gilliam; sister, Inell M. Gordon; sister-in-law, Carolyn T. Winn; aunts; uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including Phyllis Ritchie.
