Christine Goodwin

On November 19, 2003, Christine Goodwin peacefully conquered life’s final hurdle, and the Almighty gently closed her eyes and whispered to her. “Peace I Leave With You, My Peace I Give Unto You.”Christine, daughter of the late Donnie and Mollie Williams, was born on August 12, 1912 in Dunns, North Carolina, the fourth child of six children.In 1914, Christine and her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland.She was educated in the Baltimore City Pubic School System. Christine was united in holy matrimony to the late Odell O. Goodwin on November 23, 1930. From this union three children were born. Christine was employed at the Plymouth Furniture and Appliance Co. until her retirement.Christine believed and lived by the Word of God, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want; He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.” – Psalm 23:1-2. This was one of her favorite scriptures.Chris, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, was raised in a Christian home and knew at an early age the importance of a God-centered life, accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized in a Apostolic Church on Eden and Monument Streets. Later, she joined Southern Baptist Church and served under the leadership of the late Rev. James Grant, her mother, the late Sis. Mollie Williams, was one of the founders of the church. At one time he was a member of the Senior Choir Number One under the direction of the late Sis. McLilly. Christine served on the Senior Usher Board for thirty-five years. In June 1987, she received a plaque from the Senior Ushers in appreciation for her years of service. Even though she was unable to serve due to her illness, she still remained a faithful member until her death. She looked forward to praying, singing praises and receivingCommunion at home from several deacons, especially Deacon Lewis and his wife. Christine’s favorite hymns were: “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” “When I Come To The End Of My Journey.” And “A Brightside Somewhere.”Christine was once a member of the Frances E.W. Harper Temple #429 I.B.P.O.E. of W. She enjoyed reading her favorite books: The Holy Bible and The Daily Word, and singing a variety of hymns.Christine was an excellent cook and her family enjoyed eating her “southern style” cooking, especially her collard greens, sweet potato pies and her “Saturday Specialty Spaghetti.” She was known for wearing some of the most unique stylish hats.God blessed Christine with His character, unconditional love and service to mankind. With a passionate smile always on her sweet gentle face, she always spoke of God’s goodness to her and her family and how He had blessed her for many years. She had a spirit-filled life which she shared everyday with her family. She cherished helping to raise her grandchildren Christine (Nikki) and William III (Billy) and her niece, Shawn (Sweetie).Those who shared her life, enjoyed her love, grieve her passing and now look forward to a great reunion are: her son, Donnie L. Goodwin; her daughter, Barbara A. Redmond; two grandchildren, Christine Redmond and William Redmond, III; two sons-in-law, William Redmond, Jr. and Leroy Gill; two sisters-in-law, Jane Goodwin and Geraldine Goodwin; a nephew, James C. Goodwin, Jr. of Gaffney, South Carolina; a niece, Vivian Woodruff of Gaffney, South Carolina; a special niece, Shawn Haskins-Stewart of Tampa, Florida; two godsons, Daniel P.F. Aaron of Jersey City, New Jersey and Rev. Albert Prater of Baltimore, Maryland; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Christine’s daughter, Rosetta Gill preceded her in death (2000).
