Charles S. Smoot

Charles Samuel Smoot was born on November 30, 1933 in Baltimore City to the late Rosetta Thompson and William Smoot. He departed this life on September 6, 2002. Charles, who was known as “Woody” to his family and friends, was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools and pursued his further avocation in graphic arts. On June 26, 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of Airman Second Class. On July 18, 1956, Charles received an honorable discharge from military service and soon became employed with the Baltimore City Department of Sanitation. Several years later he became employed as a Meat Cutter for Esskay Meat Company where he retired. Charles married his sweetheart of many years, Vera Thompson, and from this union was birthed one son, Daryl, and from his life a granddaughter, the apple of Charles eyes, Imani. One could not overstate the glow and beauty of this marriage of forty-three years. Charles and Vera were an example of true married love to all who knew them and her passing last year was a continued grief even through his smile and gentle manner.Charles was a man of many talents and was an equally humble as he was gifted. He was a still life artist, a jazz enthusiast and a Congo drummer. He possessed a ready wit and leaves us memorable, if not at times, “corny” jokes and riddles. Not to be forgotten are the many culinary treats where he played host in his backyard from the grill and the smoker. Charles was an especially good brother in Christ to many. Having accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord he walked a faithful path in membership at New Covenant Tabernacle. He loved his annual role as a shepherd in the Christmas play and on rare occasions blest us with the inspiration of song. Chares is missed, but he is not lost-we know where he is! He leaves to mourn: one son, Daryl Smoot; one grand-daughter, Imani Smoot; two brothers, William “Sonny” Smoot, Norman “Butchie” Wilson; (two brothers preceded him in death, James Smoot and Glenn Wilson) one sister, Rosalind D. Schwind; one aunt, Carolyn Melvin; two brothers-in-law, Reverend Thomas R. Schwind, Martin Thompson; one sister-in-law, Vanessa Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
