Charles Lewis Townes

On April 1, 2006, DEACON CHARLES LEWIS TOWNES, JR. was called from his earthly home to his eternal home after a period of illness which he bore with a strong faith in God. He was the son of the late Charles and Lacie Townes Sr. of Blackstone, Virginia. He was born February 2, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his education from the Baltimore City Public School System, attending Dunbar Elementary and Dunbar High School. Charles was employed at Bob Davidson Ford for over thirty-five years before retiring. In 1955, Charles was united in Holy Matrimony to Charity Anderson. He received an honorable discharge after serving in the United States Armed Services. Charles accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. He was ordained a deacon under the leadership of the late Elder Henry Thornes. He later joined New Union Baptist Church where he continued to serve as a Deacon under the leadership of the Reverend Doctor Charles E. Savage, where he was a faithful and dedicated member until his health began to fail and he no longer was able to serve. He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving and devoted wife of over fifty years, Charity Townes; brother, Marshall Townes (Barbara) of Highland Springs, Va.; sister, Martha Stewart (Gurnon) of Baltimore, Md. and Radford, Va.; three brothers, Richard, Leslie and (Joseph preceded him in death); aunt, Phyllis Rice of Philadelphia, Pa.; a loving and devoted goddaughter, Tia Nicole Moorefield of Norfolk, Va.; eleven nieces, Kimberly Townes of N.Y., Keisha Townes of Highland Springs, Va., Patricia Greenhill (Larry) of Clinton, Md., Beverly Clay (Floyd) of Blackstone, Va., Marnae Wright (Lawrence) of Baltimore, Md., Deborah and Tracy Townes of N.Y., Cassandra Carter of Baltimore, Md., Lucy Bland of Petersburg, Va., St. Clair Foster (Henry) of Nashville, Tenn. and Gracie Ruffin of Accokeek, Md.; eight nephews, Lamont Townes of Baltimore, Md., Kenneth and Samuel Woodson of Baltimore, Md., Marshall Townes Jr. of Chesterfield, Va., Ronald Johnson (Deborah) of Blackstone, Va., Daryl Carter of Baltimore, Md., Ricky Carter of San Francisco, Ca. and Franklin Anderson of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; four sisters-in-law, Thelma Johnson of Blackstone, Va., Norma Carter of Baltimore, Md., Martha Woodson of Baltimore, Md. and Christine Woodson of Crewe, Va.; brother-in-law, Thomas Anderson (Emma) of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of loving and devoted great-great-nieces and -nephews, loving cousins, as well as devoted and dedicated close friends and neighbors.
